The halls have been filled with smiles, laughter, new friendships, learning, and lots of excitement as we began a brand-new school year! 📚✏️

From our youngest learners to our 8th graders, it has been such a joy to see our students settling in, growing in confidence, and living out what it means to be part of the Christ the King family. ❤️

We are grateful for our amazing teachers and staff who pour so much love and dedication into our students each day, and for our parents who partner with us in helping our children grow in faith, knowledge, and kindness.

What a beautiful way to begin a new school year! This weekend, our students brought their backpacks to each Mass for a special Backpack Blessing, asking God to guide, protect, and bless them throughout the year ahead.

We pray for all of our students, teachers, and families as we begin another school year together. May God bless our Christ the King community and walk with us every step of the way! ✝️📚

Meet Ms. Miller!

I am excited to be joining the Christ the King team as one of the Band Directors. I will be splitting my time at CKS with St. Anthony’s serving as its Band Director. I earned my Bachelor of Music Education degree from Augustana College, Rock Island. I have over 30 years of teaching experience and am not only an active music educator but also serve the students of the South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association as Co-Chair of the Middle School Honor Band and Chair of the Commission Committee. I am starting my 10th year as director of the Greater Des Moines Community Band. When I am not involved in music activities, I love spending time with my Jack Russell Terrier, Randal. I’m looking forward to meeting and working with the CKS team and meeting the CKS families.

Welcome, Ms. Shipley!

Creativity has always been at the heart of who I am. That passion led me to earn my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and build a career as a professional artist, muralist, graphic designer, and adjunct art instructor. Most recently, I completed my Master of Arts in Teaching, and I am excited to combine my love of art and education as I join Christ the King Catholic School this fall.

I believe every student is creative, and I hope to make the art room a place where students feel encouraged to explore new ideas, build confidence, and express themselves through art. I look forward to getting to know the students and families at Christ the King and sharing a fun, creative, and welcoming classroom where we can learn and grow together.

Meet Ms. Bainum, a new classroom associate!

I'm originally from Pella, Iowa. Throughout high school, I balanced work while participating in the marching band and cheering for the football team. In my free time, I enjoy attending art events and exploring new places whenever I have the opportunity.

In college, I studied graphic design while working multiple jobs in the service industry, experiences that strengthened my work ethic and time management skills. Now, I'm excited to begin this new chapter and become part of this community.

Although I've been out of school for just over a year, I've realized how much I miss the learning environment. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, beginning the school year, and embracing the opportunities this experience will bring. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and appreciate the way God has guided me to this moment.

Our next staff member is Ms. McCarville!

I have been a registered nurse since 2019 and have worked in a variety of healthcare settings, including medical-surgical, inpatient rehabilitation, and travel nursing. I am excited to bring the skills and experience I have gained throughout my nursing career to Christ the King School to support the well-being of children in the Des Moines community.

Outside of work, I enjoy going to run club, playing volleyball, and taking walks with my dog. I look forward to getting to know the students, families, and staff and becoming part of the Christ the King School community!

Follow along this week as we introduce our new staff for the 2026-2027 school year.

Welcome, Mr. Shorey!

My name is Mr. Aidan Shorey, your new band, choir, and general music teacher! This will be my fourth year as an educator, and I'm excited to lead our children in song and praise here at Christ the King Catholic School.

I grew up in Sioux City, IA, and graduated from Sioux City North in 2019. Considering my entire high school career was shaped by music, I went to the University of Northern Iowa and graduated in 2023 with a B.M. in Instrumental Music Education, with my main instrument being euphonium. During my time at UNI, I participated in many of their ensembles, including the Panther Marching Band, UNITUBA, the Varsity Men's Glee Club, several chamber ensembles, and the crown jewel being the UNI Wind Ensemble, which toured in Central Europe in the spring of 2022. After college, I taught 5-12 band and was a speech/drama coach at Panorama Community Schools for the past three years. There, I learned much of what it takes to make a program grow. I am exhilarated to bring all that experience here to CKS!

If I'm not doing something music-related, I love studying theology, helping out at church with VBS and/or Sunday School, learning about history through all means (including historical video games), cooking, traveling, and riding roller coasters. To date (July of 2026), I have ridden 95 unique roller coasters, hoping to very soon break 100 credits!

Once again, I'm very excited to continue the growth of all our music programs here at CKS! Music is not just a hobby or activity, but rather, it is the way we offer our prayers and thanksgivings to the Lord. As St. Augustine once said, "He who sings prays twice."
