Drake Opera Theater is in Vicenza, Italy at the International Lyric Academy. Professor Christine Fortner-Blanner is conducting Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, 1 of 3 operas at the festival.

Big congratulations to Drake University music alum Becca Mataloni on being named a 2026 Des Moines Business Record Forty Under 40 honoree! 🎉

Becca graduated from Drake in 2013 with a B.A. in News/Internet Journalism and a minor in Music (Saxophone). Today, she’s the Senior Manager of Marketing Creative at ITA Group.

Looking back on her time in Drake Music, Becca shared something we think every student needs to hear:

“Drake music taught me that you don’t have to be perfect. You just have to keep practicing, keep adjusting, and keep showing up for the people around you to create something really beautiful.”

Her advice for current students?
“Put in the work, say yes to the hard stuff, be open to feedback, and soak it all in—it goes by way too fast!”

Congratulations, Becca! Thanks for reminding us that the skills you build in the practice room, resilience, collaboration, and persistence, carry far beyond graduation.

Congratulations to Drake Jazz I, prof. Andy Classen, and prof. emeritus Clarence Padilla on their European tour! They were 1 of 3 college ensembles invited to perform at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy. They also performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, as well as the Vienne Jazz Festival in France along the Rhône River, and are heading to Reims to finish out a successful tour!

This summer, Drake University's music education program hosted an Orff-Schulwerk Level I course in partnership with First Iowa Orff. This is the first time an Orff Level I course has been offered in Iowa in over a decade! Orff-Schulwerk is a dynamic and creative model for music education in schools that includes singing, playing instruments, speech, and movement. The level courses provide certification and professional development for pre-service and in-service music teachers. Next summer, Drake is excited to offer Orff Level I, Orff Level II, and Kodály Level I. University Music Department
