I’m excited to share a new musical story video, El maíz, now available on Spanish Cuentos. It uses simple language, catchy rhythms, and natural cultural context to support language acquisition. The story unfolds in the Latin American countryside, where culture isn’t a lesson—it’s simply part of daily life: the food, the setting, the family dynamics, and even a subtle nod to the Mayan creation story, in which humans were made from corn.
In El maíz, a family is confronted by an unexpected visitor who appears in the cornfields—an old tale I grew up hearing in my hometown, where women are often the problem solvers, the brave ones, and the heads of their families. It’s engaging, comprehensible, and ideal for sparking class discussions while immersing students in authentic storytelling.
If you’re looking for something fresh, comprehensible, and culturally rich for your students, this might be a great fit. It’s now available with a Spanish Cuentos subscription.

👻 A ghostly legend from Venezuela…
This time of year, I love bringing spooky stories into the classroom — stories that give students a few chills and a chance to connect with authentic Latin American culture.
One of my favorites is El silbón de Venezuela, the haunting legend of a ghostly figure who wanders the plains at night, whistling a chilling tune. It’s written for Spanish learners, full of high-frequency language, suspense, and cultural depth — perfect for October.
My students get completely hooked. Some even start imitating the whistle in class (which is both hilarious and terrifying).
If you’re looking for something engaging and seasonally spooky for your Spanish students, you might want to check it out.

Have you heard about Luana y la Pacarana? Check out this review left by a teacher: "This book is funny, visually interesting, and engaging. I will be using it as a class novel with my 7th grade 2nd year Spanish students. The book ties in vocabulary related to pets, house, food, and several images hint at a number of Colombian traditions that you can spend additional time learning about. The book also covers more challenging topics like animal trafficking, which would make for engaging discussion." https://spanishcuentos.com/shop/luana-y-la-pacarana/

Last but not least: LUANA! My students LOVE these graphics and all the animals.
Luana harbors a deep love for animals, but her strict father firmly believes that pets have no place within the walls of their home.
When fate brings a wild pacarana into Luana’s life, she can’t resist the temptation to secretly adopt the adorable creature. However, Luana’s joyous secret soon turns into a whirlwind of chaos and mischief. With each passing day, the secret becomes harder to keep, and Luana must summon all her resourcefulness and determination to protect her furry friend and find a solution to the mounting troubles.
Set in the beautiful Colombian coffee region and filled with cultural references throughout; ‘Luana y la pacarana’ is a compelling, comprehensible and illustrated novel for Novice level readers and above.
