GEAR UP Iowa We're preparing students to succeed in postsecondary education in 13 school districts across Iowa. 🎓 Department of Treasury's American Rescue Plan.

The Iowa Department of Education's Bureau of Iowa College Aid has received a series of grants to support the establishment of GEAR UP (Gaining Early Access and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Iowa, a program supporting underserved students to prepare, enroll and persist through college. Every 10th grade student was told 'Do not wait for someone else to write your story. Pick up the pen,' with that message placed on a pen and magnetic holder on their locker.

This week, 130 GEAR UP Iowa students from eight GEAR UP partner schools participated in a campus visit to the University of Iowa.

The experience provided students with exposure to the college environment, academic programs and potential career pathways. In addition to touring the campus, students selected from sessions featuring the College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Tippie College of Business, UI Health Care and STEM Careers 101.

These sessions provided students with an opportunity to learn more about specific academic areas and explore connections between their interests, postsecondary education and future career opportunities.

As National GEAR UP Week closes, we recognize four GEAR UP Iowa students who are better equipped to serve their classmates after attending the GEAR UP Youth Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., this summer.

Zoey Cruciani-Worth (Davenport Community Schools ), Silas Falk (Columbus Community School District), JuKobe Burrage (Des Moines Public Schools ) and Sunny Sorenson (Des Moines Public Schools) participated in the four-day leadership training where they learned skills and strategies to help them and fellow students navigate their future.

They also led presentations about current education issues that impact students in front of 2,000 NCCEP Conference attendees.

Looking back at the great work Columbus Community Schools did in celebrating GEAR UP Week!

Students created a banner titled, "GEAR UP! The Future is in our Hands", where they wrote some of their goals and dreams for their future. Students also enjoyed donuts and Sunny D with the messages, "Donut Stop Believin' In Your GEAR UP Dreams," and "The Future Is Bright and Sunny With GEAR UP.'"
