Highlights of Governor Reynolds FY 2024 budget include:
• Setting Supplemental State Aid (SSA) at 2.5%- unfortunately, this percentage equates to fewer dollars as roughly 6000 fewer students enrolled in our public schools this year due to COVID. This means 2.5% represents $20.1 million – less than a quarter of new funding that school districts received through the formula last year. Just for perspective, 2.5% last year was the equivalent of $95 million.
• Cuts to area education agencies (AEAs)- the governor’s budget assumes an additional $17 million cut to the AEAs as well as the continuation of the statutory reduction of $7.5 million for a total of $24.5 million.
• Community college funding- the budget includes an increase of $5.5 million for a total recommended investment just shy of $230,000,000. The equivalent of a 2.5% increase.

Vouchers- SSB 1022 and HSB 1 (ISEA-Against)

• This bill would create education savings accounts, phased in over a three-year period. Estimated costs are: $106 million in the first year, $157 in the second and more than $340 million in the third, at which point when the plan would provide a voucher for any student who wants to attend a private school. Reynolds' staff believes the cost to the state will be more than $900 million over the first four years– all without the government oversight, transparency and accountability of taxpayer dollars that our public schools and their locally elected boards adhere to.

Every SEP Preschooler Receives Free Book – The Gruffalo!

Tracy Dawson, a Spring Creek 6th grade teacher, applied for a grant through the Iowa State Education Association’s Community Outreach program to purchase a book for each of the district’s preschoolers. Tracy was informed that she had been awarded the $500 grant at the end of October and by the middle of November a free book was in the hands of every preschooler across the district.
