What is the Borlaug-Ruan Internship?

The BR Internship is a life-changing professional experience at leading research institutions around the world.

Students travel internationally to discover new cultures and environments, all while substantially contributing to food and agriculture research and programs. Many find new interests and passions and build important skills to lead change in the food system.

Our Borlaug-Ruan Interns and Wallace-Carver make exceptional contributions to their host institutions each and every year.

This year, interns and fellows contributed to projects on carbon markets, push-pull farming, food security policy, crop production, pest control, and more.

One fellow even ran an experiment from her dorm room on how to formulate a cold-brew beverage from different pigmented rice varieties!

🌎 Greta Thunberg famously protested climate change on Fridays in front of the Swedish parliament, leading to the creation of the worldwide phenomenon Friday’s for Future, a youth-led protest for climate action.

🌎 Isra Hirsi founded the U.S. Youth Climate Strike when she was 16, for which she won a Bower Youth award. Isra has presented at TEDx, speaking about her experience as a black Muslim woman fighting for social justice.

🌎 Jerome Foster founded Climate Reporter, a news website dedicated to providing truthful information on the climate crisis. Jerome serves on the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council as the youngest member of the Biden Administration. He also recently founded a voting-non profit OneMillionOfUs 🗳

🌎 Leah Thomas founded Intersectional Environmentalist, a climate justice collective radically imagining a more equitable + diverse future of environmentalism. Their IG page helps youth understand how they can fight the climate crisis while centering BIPOC communities.

🌎 Marie Claire Graf serves as Global Focal Point of YOUNGO UNFCC, the official Youth Constituency of UN Climate Change. She was also a part of the 🇨🇭Swiss Delegation at COP25 and is a Climate Reality Leader.

🌎 Maycon Santos created SobreViver, an app that connects Brazilian farms to schools in need of food. Maycon won the Bayer 2019 Ag Summit and is currently studying Engineering Psychology at Tufts University.

🌎 Mikaela Loach created and co-hosts The Yikes Podcast, which discusses environmental and social activism. In addition to her podcast, Mikaela wrote a sustainability blog and is campaigning against the oil rig 🛢in the UK’s North 🌊 Sea.

🌎 Niel Deshmukh created PlantumAI at age 16 to help farmers identify crop diseases. Neil grew up in India and was inspired to create the app after seeing farmers in his town spray crops with multiple pesticides 🌾.
