St. Philomena Catholic School Des Moines, WA St. Philomena School's History Mildred Downey. St Philomena School opened with grades 1- 5, and the dedication of the school took place on April 19, 1964.

Philomena Catholic School opened in the fall of 1963 under the guidance of four Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur: Sister Francis Julie, Sister Raymond Francis, Sister Mary Christopher, and Sister Joseph, plus one lay teacher, Mrs. The charism of this order is “to make known God’s goodness”, and so they also dedicated themselves to the Christian education of the poor, especially girls. By 1969 the sc

hool had expanded to include grades six, seven, and eight. In 1973, during a period of economic decline both regionally and nationally, the sisters were called back to their mother house in Belmont, California. Despite the economic difficulties, the school’s parents decided they would do what was necessary to keep the school open. With the aid of the pastor, a lay-led faculty was hired and a School Commission was established. In 1986 the kindergarten program was instituted, and in 1996 the extended-day program, known as Kids’ Club, began. At the present time, the school is staffed by a dedicated, entirely lay, faculty. A 4 year old PreKindergarten Program opened September, 2012. Archdiocese of Seattle Catholic Schools Facebook Comment Policy:

Our Parish Family Celebration is less than one month away! We will begin with a 10:30 am bilingual mass at St. Thomas, followed by a potluck, music, games, and fellowship! Parents and other family members who wish to volunteer at school or attend field trips must complete the Safe Environment class, Protecting God’s Children for Adults. Deacon Jerry will offer a class on Tuesday, September 8th, at 6:00 PM in the Parish Hall. This is especially important for new parents!

Participants must register through VIRTUS. Classes are also available at other locations. Current family members who have already completed the training do not need to retake the class, but must remain current with their VIRTUS requirements.

The 2026 St. Philomena Father-Daughter Dance is just around the corner! The dance will take place in the Parish hall on Saturday, September 26th. This year, the theme is: "Dad + Daughter = Challenge accepted!" It will be a high-energy evening where Dads and Daughters team up to take on silly, creative, and competitive challenges. Please join us for one of the most important meetings of the school year—Curriculum Nights! The 5th–8th Grade Curriculum Night will be held on Tuesday, September 1st, and the PreK–4th Grade Curriculum Night will be held on Wednesday, September 2nd. Both evenings will begin at 6:00 PM in the classrooms.

A few important reminders:

Children do not attend Curriculum Night sessions.
Childcare will be available only on Wednesday, September 2nd.
8th Grade High School Parent Meeting
There will also be a special High School Meeting for 8th-grade parents on Tuesday, September 1st, at 5:00 PM in the 8th-grade classroom.

Mrs. Hoyer will provide valuable information about the high school process, including:

High school applications
Open houses
Entrance testing
Important deadlines
Other important information to help families prepare for high school
We strongly encourage all 8th-grade parents to attend this important meeting.

Our Summer Family Event was fantastic! Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy and evening of reconnecting and fun.

We also want to extend a special shoutout to all parent volunteers, especially Anna Swart, for organizing the evening and providing many resources for our families.

We were also so happy to have to have a Photo Booth from the Augustyn family, a bounce house from the Shultis family, a slime bar by the Cosola family, the Bean Hut Espresso - Mobile Coffee & Energy Drink Truck, Des Moines, WA Police Department, Des Moines Fire Department, and Sterling’s Face Painting and Henna.

We can’t wait to see you all tomorrow for Meet and Greet and then the first day of school on Wednesday!
