This week’s DMACC Career Academy spotlight is the Carroll Career Academy, featuring Katie Smith! Katie works with high school students to help map out future plans and select college credit courses to take in high school. Katie serves as Career Advantage Academic Advisor, supporting high school students as they transition to their next step after high school, regardless of what that might be. During students senior year, Katie helps them submit college applications, file the FAFSA, and guide them through the college-going process. Katie enjoys helping students feel less overwhelmed about the college process.
Outside of DMACC, Katie is a mother of three beautiful children and a farmer’s wife. She have a creative side that she enjoys the art of photography and design. You will find Katie snapping photos, chasing cows (and kids) around their farm, cruising the gravel roads, and helping her husband in their hog barns. Katie is fulfilling her passion of helping people and, later on she calls, "ditching those heels for chore boots."
The best advice Katie Smith would give to a high school student is, "to explore all of your options while you can in high school! Don’t box yourself into one area. Try new and different things to really find out what you’re going to enjoy doing with your time and life after high school. The saying is completely true that if you enjoy what you do, you’ll never “work” a day in your life!"
