When caring women LIVE UNITED, children's lives improve. Graduation
from high school is an 18-year journey, beginning
at birth.

United Way of Central Iowa Women’s Leadership
Connection (WLC) members believe all children
should start school ready to learn. WLC invests in research-based strategies
that ensure children are ready for kindergarten –
the first step in that journey. Since WLC began in 2002, central Iowa’s most
caring women have contributed more than
$10 million to improve the entire network of care
and support that lead to success in kindergarten
and throughout the child’s education.

United Way of Central Iowa in collaboration with Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, and Bravo Greater Des Moines have released the results of a joint Central Iowa Nonprofit Sector Survey. The findings reveal a nonprofit sector that is facing increased demand but lacks sustainable resources to meet them.

Now more than ever, nonprofits are stepping up to serve the community but to continue this critical work, they need our support.

"It's essential for all sectors—government, business, nonprofits, and community members—to work together in a collaborative, systems-level approach to create a stronger, more resilient community." – Mary Sellers, President, United Way of Central Iowa

Let’s stand united in support of the nonprofits working tirelessly to serve central Iowans. Together, we can build a sustainable future for ALL.

The 2021-2022 Book Buddy program is already at the halfway mark! Book Buddy focuses on supporting four-year-old students across central Iowa by providing books and a volunteer reading partner to increase all aspects of literacy and better prepare them for Kindergarten. This year, 138 Book Buddy volunteers are reading with over 400 students across 9 local childcare centers funded in part by United Way of Central Iowa’s Women United members.

This program is just as impactful to volunteers as it is for the students. One Conmigo Book Buddy volunteer said: “It has been a joy. The kids are so well behaved and engaged, and the staff so organized! I leave each session energized and touched.”
