Red Door Fencing

Red Door Fencing Olympic-style epee fencing club located in Des Moines' East Village since 2014 Red Door Fencing is a competitive epee fencing club located in Des Moines, Iowa.

We strive to help each fencer reach their goals, whether that means learning a new sport, getting in shape, or winning tournaments. We offer introductory classes, lessons, and training for all ages and experience levels. RDF is a member of the Iowa Division of USA Fencing. RDF as a concept began in 2012 as a cooperative effort by four individuals looking for a different fencing experience than wha

t was available in the area. After over a year of planning and stalking local real estate, the group arranged to lease about 2400 sf in the basement of a Des Moines auto shop. We went from 3 people practicing in a church basement, a handful practicing in the auto shop space since major improvements were completed in October 2013, and we opened to beginner fencers in January 2014. We expanded the club to almost twice its original square footage in 2018, which allows us to host small tournaments. We usually have around 30 members. Visitors are always welcome!

Five of our fencers competed at Summer Nationals in Portland, OR at the beginning of July! They all had some great bouts and we all have some things to work on when the new season starts in August! Here's how they placed:

Tristan: CDT Men's Epee - 304th, D2 ME - 263rd, Y14 ME - 21st, D3 ME - 14th
Kalina: JR Women's Epee - 207th, CDT WE - 174th (tie), D1 WE -
145th, Y14 WE - 25th (tie)
Malakai: D2 ME - 212th (tie), D3 ME - 143rd
James: Y14 ME - 266th, Y12 ME - 118th
Sarah: D1A WE - 84th (tie), D2 WE - 19th

Also, Kalina fenced on a team with Maddy from LFC and Maggie from Illinois (and Sarah was the alternate) that finished 23rd in Sr. Team Women's Epee!

Yesterday six RDF kids traveled over to Lincoln, NE for their annual Capital City Youth Classic tournament! It was the first out-of-town tournament for Liam, James L. and James G. We saw some great bouts, earned lots of experience points testing our skills against new people in a new environment, and enjoyed seeing the friends we've been training and competing alongside all season as well as meeting new friends!

In Y12/Y10 Mixed Epee, Robert tied for 3rd.
In Y14 Mixed Epee, Tristan won the gold medal, Kalina took silver, Liam finished 5th, James G. was 9th, James L. (the 2nd) ended 11th, and Robert finished 12th.
Robert also tied for 3rd in Y10/Y12 combined mixed foil.

Tristan and Sarah fenced at the GRAFA RYC/RJCC/ROC in Grand Rapids, MI last weekend. Tristan was busy with 4 events in 2 days, winning a pool bout and finishing 27th in JR Men's Epee as one of the 2 youngest fencers in the event, ending 21st in Cadet ME, then winning Division 3 ME and earning his D26 rating, and taking home the 7th place medal in Y14 ME! Sarah tied for 3rd in D1A WE and renewed her C rating!

More from the March NAC in Cleveland:
James fenced Y12 Men's Epee, sweeping his pool to become 13th seed, won his first DE and lost his 2nd, finishing 33rd.
Malakai fenced Division 2 ME, where he was 3-3 in pools, but unfortunately lost his DE and ended 132nd.
James was back in Y14 ME, where he went 3-3 in pools, lost a close DE, which put his final place at 142nd.

Also, Kalina's 8th place finish in Y14 WE means she renews her B rating.
