Such leadership was recently recognized by Polk Soil & Water Conservation District, a regional educator of best practices for soil and storm water management in Central Iowa. In late July, Silent Rivers' founder Chaden Halfhill received the 2013 Urban Steward of the Year award at the Polk County Fair for his vision and dedication to the Green & Main site development.

Staff, together with incredibly committed trade associates, restored the soil on a 13,000 SF urban lot and reestablished native plants. The upgraded site upgrade also included a permeable parking area and a vegetated sedum roof.

On July 26, 2017, 1000 Friends of Iowa along with the DM Sustainability Task Force organized a tour of sustainability around Des Moines with Mayor Cownie and other City Council members. The DART bus was packed with a powerhouse of sustainable minded folks.
