October El Paso Staff Spotlights!

This month, we are celebrating two amazing members of our Cougar family!

Certified Staff Spotlight: Madi Obermitte
Madi is a Speech-Language Pathologist who loves watching our students achieve their goals. Did you know she has biked across Kansas three times?

Classified Staff Spotlight: Dana Velotta
Dana is an Administrative Assistant who loves the staff and students at El Paso. Kindness makes her smile, and she enjoys spending her free time reading. Her favorite quote is “Live life to the fullest!”

We appreciate everything Madi and Dana do to make El Paso such a great place to learn and grow!

Today Kindergarten,1st grade and 2nd grade all enjoyed a fire safety presentation put on by the Derby Fire Department.
Students were able to help a firefighter get dressed in their bunker gear, hear what a firefighter sounds like with their mask on, and high five the firefighter to feel their bunker gear. It’s important for students to know what a firefighter looks like in their bunker gear, so they won’t be scared should they ever need a firefighter in an emergency situation. Firefighters encouraged students not to hide, but to be loud and call out to the firefighters so they can easily be found.
Students also got to experience the smoke house. They learned the importance of getting low and exiting the building. They were reminded to dial 9-1-1 only in an emergency situation. Students were encouraged to learn their address and talk to their families about establishing a meeting place.
Thank you to Derby Fire for taking time out of their day to help educate our students! We appreciate you!

We love “Shop Day” in 2nd grade! Throughout a period of 2 weeks, students earn class money for things such as following expectations, classroom jobs, and exemplifying our El Paso “Learner Dispositions”, which include being a practitioner, cooperative, curious, perseverant, and self-motivated. Students then get the option to “spend” that money to buy classroom prizes or save it for bigger rewards every other Friday!
