Every neighborhood had that one person.

The one who somehow knew your name...

Your parents' names...

And exactly what you were doing wrong before you even realized you were doing it.

You didn't have to live in their house to get corrected.

If they caught you throwing rocks, climbing roofs, cutting through somebody's yard, or doing something that started with, "Watch this..."

You were getting yelled at.

And somehow, that was just normal.

Nobody thought it was strange.

The neighborhood looked out for the neighborhood.

The funniest part?

After getting a lecture from someone else's dad, you'd walk home knowing the worst was still coming.

Because somehow...

Your parents already knew.

To this day, I'm convinced every parent on the block had a secret phone line that only existed for reporting what the neighborhood kids were up to.

That phrase didn't just end the conversation.

It started the longest five hours of your childhood.

You'd sit there replaying everything in your head.

Maybe Mom would forget.

Maybe Dad would come home in a good mood.

Maybe your older brother would accidentally do something worse.

Every car door that slammed outside made your stomach drop.

Every set of headlights in the driveway felt like the countdown had reached zero.

The punishment wasn't always the worst part.

The waiting was.

Looking back, it's funny how one sentence could change the entire mood of a house.

No yelling.

No lecture.

Just six words...

And suddenly, you had all afternoon to think about the choices that got you there.
