Derby Middle Schools serves a diverse population of approximately 875 students in grades 6 through 8 in a safe and supportive environment. Our school is located in the heart of Derby, KS at the corner of Madison and Woodlawn. In order to prepare students to live in and contribute to a changing world, Derby Middle School prov

ides a progressive education to meet the academic, cultural and social needs of the students in our community. Derby Middle School also has specifically designed instruction for every student’s individual learning needs. We are proud to be a part of Read 180 which is a proven reading intervention program that directly addresses individual needs through differentiated instruction, adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. There is a strong commitment to a team approach at DMS. There are 2 teams per grade Each team has approximately 130 students. We believe the teaming approach allows teachers to build strong relationships with students and help them to be successful at the middle level. Teaming also allows for teachers to collaborate and review student data to drive their instruction. Parents are able to work closely teachers on the team concerning their child's learning needs. In addition to a rigorous curriculum, DMS provides several electives. Project Lead the Way, a project-based curriculum that focuses on math, science and technology and offers unique opportunities for students to use their knowledge in hands-on experiences. DMS has a proud tradition of excellence in the fine arts. We provide Band, Vocal and Orchestra classes. These music programs consistently score one ratings at festivals and competitions. If students have an interest in Art we have tremendous program in 2D and 3D design. FACS, PE and Foreign Language round out the elective curriculum. DMS believes technology to be vital to the education of students today. We provide computer studies classes and have a one-to-one iPad inititive

Students at DMS will develop leadership skills. They will learn to develop a healthy self-concept, build healthy relationships, and understand the concept of personal responsibility. It’s always a great day to be a Derby Bulldog!

📼🕶️📀 History came to life today! 🎶💾
Our sixth graders stepped into the past as they explored pop culture artifacts from the 1970s through the early 2000s! Students got to do more than just look—they were able to handle the artifacts, try them out, and document what they observed.

From “old-school” technology to everyday items, students discovered that the things we use can tell us a LOT about the time period in which we live. 🔍

This hands-on investigation is the perfect kickoff to our upcoming conversations about primary and secondary sources and how historians use evidence to learn about the past.

And yes… some students were shocked to discover that these were once considered high-tech! 😂📼☎️

Over the summer, Derby Public Schools moved to BOUND as the all-in-one platform for secondary athletics and activities. BOUND brings registration, scheduling, ticketing and other athletics management tools together in one place. Previously, the district used three separate platforms:
• Final Forms for student registration (where many registered their child(ren) for a sport and uploaded physicals)
• GoFan for online ticketing (all in one place for home and away games)
• rSchool/Activity Scheduler for schedules and league management

BOUND replaced all three systems. The move follows a January 2026 decision by the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League (AVCTL) and Wichita Suburban League (middle schools) to transition league scheduling and management from rSchool to BOUND. Many Kansas schools and leagues have already made the switch, including the Wichita City League, Sunflower League, Western Athletic Conference and Eastern Kansas League. For Derby, moving to one platform provides a more streamlined experience while also reducing costs.

Just a reminder that the Back to School Splash for Derby Middle School and Derby North Middle School students is happening TODAY, August 14, at Rock River Rapids!
From 5:30-7:30 p.m., students in 6th-8th grade can enjoy an evening of music, water fun and hanging out with friends for just $5. Please bring your student ID.
