Modern and Contemporary Art in NYC
May 17-30 Downpayment Deadline Extended to February 5th, 2026
Course Description
Students in this course travel to New York City to study art made in the 20th and 21st centuries within that city's context. Through museum visits and walks on locations, students investigate how working in that city's environment shaped artists' perspectives and how the relationships that were formed impacted the collaborations, experiments, and venues that became historically significant. From the Ashcan School, to Abstract Expressionism, Happenings, and the East Village art scene, students learn about the artworks and movements that shaped Modern and Contemporary art in the United States.
Students have opportunities to visit major world-class museums as well as smaller, focused archives and collections. Students further research and write about a body of work they see in person, integrating the experience of seeing the work in situ with knowledge gained from scholarly secondary sources.
