Today, we honor the woman who made DSA possible.
Katherine "Kay" Schomp was named one of The Denver Post's 150 most notable Coloradans in Colorado history β and she earned every bit of it.
Kay served on the Denver Board of Education from 1973 to 1983, fought through the controversy of school desegregation, and built the first magnet school program in DPS. But her greatest act was refusing to stop at "it can't be done."
She crusaded for years to create a school where artistically talented middle and high school students could belong. In August 1991, the Denver School of the Arts opened its doors with 180 students. She became the first chair of the Friends of the School of the Arts and watched her vision grow into something she could have only dreamed of.
That school is now home to over 1100 students. Every performance, every film, every painting, every note played on this campus traces back to her.
Kay Schomp didn't just believe in arts education. She built it.
We are proud to be her legacy. ππ¨πΆ

Our DSA community lost someone truly irreplaceable. Kevin Adams gave 20 years of his life to DPS students, including ours, and his dedication to young people never wavered.
His family has set up a GoFundMe to support Sophia and Tacari's educational costs β a fitting tribute to a man who believed in learning above all else.
If you were touched by Kevin, this is one way to show it. Every contribution matters.
