Perhaps someday I can get back to writing and encouraging other people to homeschool bilingually. But for right now my full attention is needed right here. 😊

A few days ago we joined a homeschool bird banding fieldtrip with . It was so awesome we went back early in the morning a few days later and helped band more birds!

Since we were the only kids there, my kiddos got to release the birds after the banding.

We came home and journaled about our experience, AND I also printed out the Pajaros unit by .

And so begins YEAR 7 of our bilingual homeschool!

Today is our first true Spanish day, and friends, the truth is that we not spoken Spanish AT ALL since May.

We took a break from our weekly tutor over the summer mostly because of our move, and the kids are FEELING IT. 😢

SO, today is all about fun and games, and simply SPEAKING Spanish again.

(And reviewing our Spanish Curricula for the year, and reading good books in Spanish.)

Did anyone else slack on the minority language over the summer?

Our ‘official’ summer is coming to a close as we started back to school today!

It was a very odd first day back, due to the fact my daughter won grand champion in cake decorating at the 4-H Fair!

So we spend the weekend re-making her winning cake to be delivered to the 4-H office this morning so it can make its way to be judged at the state level!

😅 Whew! 😅

BUT, our first week back usually looks like re-establishing rhythms of chores, learning, and play.

And after a summer of moving across the state and hosting family and friends, I am ready for rhythms!

Anyone else excited for the rhythms of the school year!?🙋🏻‍♀️

I’ve been quiet here as I’ve been soaking up our new home, my childhood home.

We moved in May which means it’s been busy irrigating, growing hay, and watching calves be born.

We joined baseball and 4-H to meet people. All with an eye to meet Spanish speakers (exciting news on that to come)!

I’ve been identifying all the plants and grasses out my back door.

We take a complete break from school for two glorious summer months, and are just now looking towards the new school year as we count down the days til we start.

Just want to let you all know we are alive. More than alive, we are so thankful for our new home. ❤️

LOOK WHAT ARRIVED!!!

I can not express how excited I am! I have thought about using these workbooks for TWO years, but have always gone a different route because they are $$.

However, I have not been happy with my past choices. So…I am hopeful these workbooks are the answer to ALL MY SPANISH GRAMMAR HOPES AND PRAYERS!

Okay, enough drama. I am just really excited. 💃🏻

What do you use for Spanish Language Arts in your homeschool?

The museums in Denver never fail to impress me with the beautiful way they incorporate Spanish in all things!

We just finished up our final study of Ancient Latin America: the Mexica (Aztecs).

The first two books in this pile have been our spines all year.

The third book is a reference book we looked at throughout the year, but did not read cover to cover.

The rest of the pile are the picture books that supplemented our learning. 📚📚📚

What other books have you enjoyed that speak about the glorious history of indigenous cultures throughout Latin America?

Sometimes you plan cool projects and they flop. Not today! 🙌🏼

We are making soap carvings based on Mexica (Aztec) stone carvings.

1) Draw your design on paper and cut it out.

2) Trace the cut out onto your soap with a pencil.

3) Carve out the design!

Nisha asked the other day if people were crafty in their homeschool. I am NOT.

But today was an exception! 🥳

Narration in our bilingual homeschool:

When we read in Spanish, we narrate orally in Spanish.

However, this is my 10yo’s 4th grade year, and his first year doing written narrations. Because of this I let him chose what language to write in and he mostly always chooses his stronger language: English.

Another thing to note, is that I do not require proper spelling. We use All About Spelling (we’re in level 4), and my son is actually a very good speller…WHEN HE IS FOCUSED ON SPELLING.

But when he is writing narrations he is focused on getting the story, in an intelligible order, on the paper. Spelling takes a back seat. That’s okay.

Also note: This particular child normally writes as little as possible for his written narrations. 😜 But this story captured his imagination. It was a proud mama moment.

“Mommy, this was a very, very good book. Not a nice book, but a helpful book. Can we pray for Ukraine?” - my 8yo

I believe it was Betsy who posted about this book in English. I immediately searched for it at our library to see if it existed in Spanish, and it does.

Friends, I am a mother and a teacher, not a politician or journalist. To that end, I will share resources I find that are helpful for having hard conversations with our children about current events. But I will not be sharing news or articles, or really commenting much about current events.

However, this book was a very helpful tool to begin a conversation with my children about war. Thanks, Betsy for the recommendation.
