It’s not about what you’re doing.
It’s about who you’re being.

That’s the lesson I keep living.

What will happen, will happen.
What get to choose is who I am while it’s happening.

I’ve always been proud of my variety and inconsistency. It’s the spice in my sriracha. 🤣 But maybe what I used to see as inconsistency wasn’t actually that random.

I’ve lived long enough now to recognize the rhythm.

I’ve done a lot of different things but how I do those things is often really similar. I like to inspire, to uplift, to build people… I also can be brutally straightforward when I see someone drifting from their best self. I don’t hold back… not my love, my fear, my intensity, my weird… whatever is real is out there for all to see. These things have become the samskaras I have chosen or unintentionally written on the record of my life.

The seasons where I build and the ones where I soften. The moments I reach outward and the ones I return home. The things I shed, the things I find again, and the ways of being I keep coming back to.

Perhaps midlife isn’t about finally figuring out exactly who you are.

It’s recognizing your own rhythms well enough to trust them.

Day 4/30 posting until I turn 40

Dance parties are part of every night for us. It helps me shake off the day and it teacher her confidence. Plus it’s easy to do while cooking (albeit unproductively)

As I’m nearing 40 I’m asking myself, what do I want this next decade to be more of? What do I want it to be less of?

Way back in the day when Instagram began, I wanted every post to be perfect and I HATED posting. There was a yoga studio that I taught for that mandated we have a social media presence and every time I filmed myself it was agony. Nothing was ever good enough. But it was a job requirement… so I decided I’d film something no more than 3x and whatever was the best take I’d run with it. That same year I got a tattoo about the perfection of imperfection. When I let go, it became fun. I wasn’t necessarily trying to do the perfect thing for my feed because I didn’t want infamy, I just was part of this IG thing and I was using it to see what resistances I came across. What friction lived within me. Then I could say, is this worth it? Do I push through? Or do I change? It was great for a time and then slowly it became something that wasn’t for me again. Gradually I switched from feed posts to stories where I felt like I could be authentic and things didn’t have to be so perfect. Eventually even stories felt arduous and I began kind of hiding.

I felt like I didn’t have things worth saying or sharing, that I didn’t have the energy to do one more thing. Instagram became a thing that took from me, versus a tool for self discovery.

So this countdown is an experiment. If I commit ONE minute a day to showing up and seeing what spills out… what will happen? What resistances will I face? What will I see in myself? And most importantly, what will this next decade reveal to me?

I don’t pay for the coffee, I pay for the confidence boost.

One of the best lessons I’ve ever learned about parenting didn’t come from a parenting book.

It came from a great manager.

People grow when they’re challenged just beyond what they think they can do, supported when they stumble, and reminded of what they’re capable of before they try again.

Maybe confidence isn’t something we’re born with. Maybe it’s something we help build in each other.

“The greatest thing you'll ever learn... is to love, and be loved in return.”
- Moulin Rouge

I’d love to take this notion to the next level, to learn to love and to learn how to feel love. It’s not about someone else loving you, though that is beautiful as well, it’s about learning to feel the love that exists all around you. To feel the vibratory sense of the emotion in every cell. To let that love emanate from you. Whatever you put out, you feel, and perhaps that’s why they say karma comes back to you, but what if it never “leaves” what if it is just that you feel what you create and you see through that lens. So perhaps the greatest thing you’ll ever know... is simply to love, to feel your own love, and to see it reflected around you.

There are many other worlds existing out there, but there is only one earth. May we take time to broaden our perspectives, to behold and admire the many different ways of living, and gone in one what kind of world we want to create for ourselves, and what kind of earth for future generations.
