🔔As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we want to ensure every student feels supported not just academically, but emotionally. A child’s mental health and social-emotional well-being are the foundations for everything they do, from building friendships to succeeding in the classroom. 🔗Please fill out your BESS parent screener by this Friday to provide the vital insights we need to support your student’s growth. tinyurl.com/bessparent

FROSTBITE RISK FOR YOUR PET
Your pet’s fur looks like a warm coat, and it does have some naturally insulating properties. But when colder weather sets in, your protective instincts need to spring into action. After all, your furry bestie looks to you to keep them safe.

The first signs of hypothermia are shivering and lethargy. If you see these signs- don’t freeze:

Dangerous temps:
At 45°F, pets start to feel the cold. Be sure to dress them in a jacket and booties before going out
At 32°F, frostbite becomes a risk for most pets
Frostbite risk factors
Your pet’s size, age, coat density, and overall health can affect how susceptible your pet can be to frostbite. Precipitation and wind further increase the potential for frostbite.

Pets most at risk:

Smaller pets
Short-haired breeds
Older pets
Puppies and kittens
Signs & symptoms of frostbite
Extremities such as paws, ears, and tails are especially prone to frostbite. Detecting frostbite isn’t easy, since it may not make itself visible for days after overexposure to cold.

Left untreated, tissue can continue to be further damaged, increasing the risk of infection. Be on the lookout for:

Pale, bluish or grey skin
Shivering
Lethargy
Lifting paws or being reluctant to place paws on the ground
What to do for frostbite

DO NOT:
Apply direct heat or rub the affected areas—this can further damage tissue.

DO:
Gently wrap your pet in a blanket or towel to preserve body heat

Take them to your local VEG ER for Pets.

Calling All Students: Share What Makes Your Teachers Great!
Teacher Appreciation Week is just around the corner, taking place May 5-9! In celebration, DPS invites our students to recognize their favorite teachers by sharing what they love most about them.

Specifically, students have the option to respond to one of the following prompts:

I love my teacher because…

My teacher has taught me…

Without my teacher, I wouldn’t…

A teacher is…

My teacher has inspired me to become (career or profession) because…

Work with the students in your life to tell us why they love their teachers by completing this short form by Friday, April 18. Please note that submissions may be featured on the DPS website and DPS social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn).

We look forward to sharing these perspectives and thanking our amazing educators for helping Every Learner Thrive!
