What’s the difference between a functional ingredient and an active ingredient? 🌿

Mal breaks down an important part of understanding skincare formulations.

Functional ingredients help create and support the product itself. They can affect things like texture, consistency, stability, preservation, or how the product spreads and feels on the skin.

Active ingredients are included for the effect they have on the skin and are the ingredients we look to when we’re trying to address a specific concern or create change.

Mal also shares a helpful rule of thumb when reading an ingredient list: ingredients are generally listed in order of concentration, so take a close look at the first 5–10 ingredients to get a better idea of what makes up the formula and where some of those change-focused ingredients may appear.

There are exceptions! Some ingredients are effective at very low concentrations, so their position lower on the list doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t important.

Learning ingredients isn’t just memorizing names. It’s learning how to understand the formula as a whole. ✨

🔎 Skin Analysis for a Back Chemical Peel

Watch as Jen demonstrates a brief skin analysis before performing a chemical peel service on the back.

Before filming this demonstration, we completed a much more thorough client intake and consultation. For educational purposes online, we kept this portion short and sweet while still showing some of the important things we look for when assessing the skin before a chemical peel.

These are some of the details we love incorporating into our continuing education classes at SBMA. Learning to assess and treat skin beyond the face gives estheticians the knowledge and confidence to safely customize services for different areas of the body. ✨

✨ The Goddess Facial ✨

If you’ve ever had the chance to watch Martin perform his famous Goddess Facial, you know it’s so much more than a skincare treatment.

Martin only brings this demo to the classroom once or twice a year, and it’s always something special. The Goddess Facial is about showing our students what can happen when you bring intention, presence, and genuine care into every part of a service.

From thoughtful touch and intentional movements to creating an environment where your client can truly relax, this demo reminds us that a facial doesn’t have to be just about treating the skin. It can be an experience that helps someone slow down, feel cared for, and leave feeling completely renewed. 🌿✨

It’s one of those demos that beautifully shows our students the difference between simply performing a service and creating an experience.

Thank you, Martin, for sharing a little Goddess magic with our students. 💫

✨ Eyeliner hack for a cleaner, more flattering wing!

Kat is sharing a simple technique that can make creating your winged liner so much easier.

Instead of guessing where your wing should go, use the bottom lash line as your guide. Start with a small tick mark of eyeliner, following the natural angle of the lower lash line upward and outward. That little mark gives you a starting point for the direction and shape of your wing.

From there, connect and build your liner gradually. It’s less about trying to draw the perfect wing in one swipe and more about using the anatomy of the eye to guide your placement. 👁️✨

Small mark. Better guide. Cleaner wing.

While a client is masking, it’s the perfect time to bring some extra attention to the shoulders, neck, and décolleté. 🌿✨

Martin is sharing some of his favorite essential oils to incorporate while performing these massage manipulations:

💜 Lavender — calming and relaxing, helping create an overall soothing experience.

🌿 Marjoram — valued for its antispasmodic and analgesic properties, making it a great choice when working with areas holding tension.

🌱 Sage — Martin likes incorporating sage for energetic clearing, adding another element to the experience.

❄️ Wintergreen — known for its analgesic properties and cooling sensation. Wintergreen is very potent and must always be properly diluted before topical use.

It’s all about making the most of every part of the facial while understanding the properties, intention, and safety behind what we use. 🌿

What exactly is Omnisome Technology? 🧪✨

Mal is breaking down PCA SKIN Acne Gel and simplifying the science behind how it works.

This formula uses Omnisome Technology to help deliver salicylic acid into the skin in a more controlled way. Instead of feeling like you have to aggressively attack acne, this delivery system helps the active ingredient do its job while being mindful of the skin.

Because treating acne isn’t always about going stronger. Understanding the ingredients, the formulation, and how they interact with the skin matters too. 💚

We love when Mal makes the science behind skincare make sense!
