The first step towards autism reform is embracing a comprehensive universal view of autism across the entire lifespan. We can no longer continue to focus on the needs of autistic children and stop there.

The mental health needs of autistic adults are much deeper than anxiety and depression. They also struggle with feelings of inadequacy, gender identity, guilt, shame, and loneliness. In other words, autistic adults have many of the same feelings and challenges as other adults.

The health care Industry is ill-equipped to cope with the nuances of neurodivergent patients who show up in emergency rooms and physicians' offices every day.

08/26/2026

Far too many autistic adults are having difficulty accessing health care due to outdated networks, staffing shortages, and employees who are not trained in working with neurodivergent clients.

Navigating our health care system is becoming increasingly difficult. Third-party billing (control) and who determines who is really sick (hint: it's not doctors) make the process even more frustrating. Autistic adults need help now when receiving medical attention. What will happen when parents or a caregiver can't be there to answer questions or ease their fears? It is heartbreaking that health care has become so confusing.

Sometimes parents get so busy making plans for their autistic children that they forget the most important part. Talk to the autistic person and include them in the process. It is always better to hear changes that involve them coming from you rather than from a stranger.

Communication styles vary. Yet for some reason, many people feel they can't be honest, straightforward, and sincere with autistic adults. This is where they are most comfortable! We don't have to beat around the bush with autistic people. They can take the truth a lot better than most people can.

Staffing shortages are painfully transparent in the healthcare sector. If anyone has had a medical procedure requiring a hospital stay for more than a day - you know what I mean. This is really concerning for autistic adults who can't "fill in the gaps" for themselves in many cases. The future of health care is complicated and, in many ways, very scary.

Municipal leaders are totally missing the point if they think their housing challenges are limited to affordability and homelessness. While these are very important pieces of the puzzle, there is an adult autism time bomb ticking louder every day. The number one issue facing autistic adults is housing. Aging parents are a temporary fix to a massive problem no one wants to discuss.

Having safe spaces for autistic adults is vital to their mental health. Providing a private sanctuary allows autistic adults to unmask and be themselves without fear of retribution.
