On next Monday, February 29 (12:15-1:15 PM), The Korbel School of International Studies will be hosting a conversation about the rise of populist movements in Western Europe in the post-Brexit era. Ambassador Christopher Hill, dean of the Korbel School, will be moderating the conversation. Dean Hill was ambassador to South Korea, Macedonia, Poland and Iraq. Also participating in the discussion are Alan Blinken, former ambassador to Belgium from 1993-1997; and Gary Grappo, former ambassador to Oman from 2006-2009. Korbel Professor Dale S. Rothman will begin with prospects for effective climate change policies and actions at the international level, including the outlook for implementing agreements reached at the 2015 Paris Conference on Climate Change. Pamela Campos, Senior Attorney for the Climate and Energy Program at the Environmental Defense Fund, will address domestic implications for the Clean Air Act and renewable energy. Korbel Professor Frank Laird will speak on implications of the election for national and state climate policy. DU Law Professor K.K. DuVivier will offer comments on election implications through the lens of renewable energy law.

IPPS is excited to welcome Jonathan Rauch, Contributing Editor to The Atlantic & The National Journal and a Senior Fellow in Governance at The Brookings Institution, to campus this weekend for our second Great Issues Forum this fall! The course titled: “Political Realism: How Hacks, Machines, Big Money, and Back-Room Deals Can Strengthen Democracy,” will ask graduate students if our modern aversion to “smoke-filled rooms,” “Tammany Hall” politics and “party hacks” has undermined our ability create effective political system and destroyed our most vital organizing systems. We look forward to a thought provoking and educational weekend led by Mr. Rauch!
