Happy Malbec World Day! Why is Malbec World Day celebrated on April 17?🍇

On April 17, 1853, the first agronomy school was founded in Argentina for the study of European grapes, including the Malbec grape. In the same year, Argentina’s president, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, asked a French soil expert to bring new grape varieties to his country. Among the varieties, Pouget brought Malbec.

Today, over 75% of all Malbec grapes are grown in Argentina and Malbec wine has gained popularity not just in Argentina but in countries worldwide. In 2011, Wines of Argentina established April 17 as Malbec World Day.

If you like Ice Wine - you may find this interesting.

Delighted to announce that the next Circle of Wine Writers Let’s Talk Seminar on Tuesday 6th February at 5pm BST with Michelle Bouffard and Professor Monika Christmann will deal with one wine style that could now be particularly under threat : Ice Wine - its future in a changing climate. Our presenters from two of the heartlands of this very particular wine will discuss the background story and their thoughts on what will happen in the future.
Michelle Bouffard lives in Montreal, and is an author, journalist, educator, who in 2017 founded Tasting Climate Change, an international symposium to explore the challenges and solutions in the wine industry.
Professor Monika Christmann is a former President of the OIV and is Head of Oenology at Hochscule Geisenheim, where assessing the risk of climate change is a major research focus. Guests welcome but please contact CWW - Circle of Wine Writers or Sue Eames for the link.
