5.5 Classical Certificate credits towards Measured & Analytical Drawing
One of the best ways to study and learn from architecture precedents is through observation and drawing in the field, in direct contact with original models. This course will consist of first a lecture covering the history and examples of and approach to architect’s field drawings as a methodology for the study of buildings and then the application of those methods to complete three types of field drawings (Measured, Analytical, and Perspective) of the Boulder Carnegie Library (1906).
The Boulder Carnegie Library, now known as the Carnegie Library for Local History, was designed by Thomas MacLaren and opened in 1907. MacLaren was born in Scotland and trained at the Royal Academy of London and South Kensington School of Art at Edinburgh before moving to Colorado Springs in 1894. The library is one of the 2,509 Carnegie libraries built by Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie between 1883 and 1929. The library is an excellent example of the Neoclassical Revival Style.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Learn about the use of measured, analytical and perspective sketchbook drawing as a design tool and resource from the Renaissance to present day
2. Learn techniques for architectural measured drawings, accurately drawing them to scale in a sketchbook
3. Expand architectural design skills through familiarity with architectural precedents that can inform future architectural design endeavors
4. Develop a sense for size, scale, proportion and composition through measuring and documentation

Thayer Tolles is the Ma**ca F. Vilcek Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
01/20/2026
Join the ICAA Rocky Mountain Chapter for an evening with Thayer Tolles, Ma**ca F. Vilcek Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Over her three decades at The Met, Thayer has advanced the study of American sculpture through major publications, installations, and exhibitions, including her work on Augustus Saint-Gaudens, whose refined approach to the figure transformed the development of American civic art in the late nineteenth century.
In her lecture, Thayer will explore how figural and allegorical monuments shaped the visual character of American cities in the decades surrounding the City Beautiful movement, when sculpture, architecture, and urban planning were conceived as mutually reinforcing arts. She will consider how sculptors collaborated with architects, and how their works were integrated into plazas, parks, and boulevards to enrich the experience of public space. Within this larger national story, Denver’s civic monuments reveal the city’s engagement with the same ideals that elevated figural sculpture as a vital element of city building.
Drawing on monuments from New York and beyond, with examples from Denver’s own public landscape, Thayer will highlight the artistry, craftsmanship, and evolving reception of these monuments, illustrating how they continue to shape the identity and visual coherence of the city today.
