Last week, I had the chance to return to my hometown of Grand Rapids for the ACF National Convention, and I'm so grateful I did.

The best part wasn't the conference itself—it was the people.

A huge thank you to Alain De Coster for inviting me. We met after I spoke at ACF Long Island earlier this year, and he has been one of my biggest champions ever since. He went above and beyond to make me feel welcome, introduce me to so many people, and encourage my work.

I literally ran into Eddie Daniels, who booked me for ACF Long Island, and now another opportunity is already taking shape. Eddie also started Hospitality News during the pandemic to recognize the foodservice professionals feeding the rest of the essential workforce. That story says everything about the kind of person he is, and I'm honored to have a memoir featured in the upcoming edition.

It was also wonderful to reconnect with Kurt Kwiatkowski, Todd Snopkowski, Chuck Melchiori, and Bryce Melchiori. Conferences have a way of reminding you just how important relationships really are.

One thing I heard over and over throughout the week was that my message around human connection couldn't be more timely for the foodservice industry. Hearing leaders recognize that this isn't a "nice to have"—it's essential—left me encouraged, energized, and even more excited about what's ahead.

Sometimes you leave a conference with pages of notes.

Sometimes you leave with something even better: confirmation that you're exactly where you're supposed to be.

One of my favorite moments as a coach is hearing that something we talked about actually made a difference.

This week, a client told me her team rallied around her for the first time since she started leading them several years ago.

One conversation.
One small change.
A completely different experience.

The word she used was rally.

I love that word.

People rally around leaders who help them feel seen, heard, and valued.

Leadership doesn't always require a complete overhaul. Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs come from small, intentional changes in how we connect with others.

That's why I love what I do - whether I'm coaching one leader or speaking to a room full of them.

Have you ever made one small change that created a much bigger impact than you expected?

I was referenced in another speaker’s talk at this month’s BHS breakfast event.

The mention was meaningful, but the approach was what caught my attention.

The speaker used what I had shared previously to support her own message and build on what the audience had already heard.

Rather than starting from scratch, she continued the conversation. She took familiar ideas and added a new perspective, creating a richer experience for the audience.

It’s always an honor when another speaker builds on your work. More importantly, it’s a reminder that the best learning happens when ideas connect and build on one another rather than compete for attention.

I recently met with a potential business partner. We had a personal relationship and the opportunity was hers - until it wasn’t.

When I told her I was also talking to someone else, she was surprised.

When I explained that it was a recent development and the why behind the second proposal (concerns about her lack of communication and follow through), she got up and left without saying a word.

And that told me everything I needed to know.

She wasn’t happy about the competition, but it was the criticism she couldn’t handle. That told me working with her would be difficult if not impossible.

I also learned that the hard conversations never get easier, but setting boundaries does.

And it was a reminder that when you let people do what they’re doing to so, they will show you who they truly are.

Last week, I spoke to the BHS group about the one relationship most of us ignore - and it impacts how we live, lead, and build connections with others. It's the relationship we have with ourselves.

If you or your teams are burning out, disengaging, or leading from autopilot, this is the conversation that leads to real transformation - in leadership and in effectiveness.
