In celebration of Tu BiShvat, our toddlers and preschoolers are bringing nature into the classroom through process art! Using paint dobbers, coffee filters, and tissue paper, they’ve been joyfully creating leaves and flowers for their classroom trees.

This open-ended art experience isn’t just about making something beautiful—it’s about exploration, creativity, and skill-building. As children press, dot, and blend colors, they strengthen fine motor muscles, refine hand-eye coordination, and engage in early scientific discovery through color mixing and absorption.

Each leaf and flower is unique, just like each child in our community. Through this project, we honor growth, connection to the natural world, and the beauty of learning through play. We can’t wait to see our *Tu BiShvat* trees come to life! 🌿✨ "

🌳 Happy Tu B’Shvat from Bright Lights Early Learning Center!🌳

In celebration of the New Year for the Trees, our preschoolers have been diving into hands-on explorations of plants! Together, we’ve examined the parts of a plant—roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds—learning about how each part works together to help the plant grow. The children are also discovering how to care for plants, from watering them gently to ensuring they have sunlight and love.

These activities go beyond science. They’re teaching us about tikkun olam—our shared responsibility to repair and care for the world. Just as we nurture the plants, we reflect on how small acts of care and kindness can help the earth thrive, one step at a time.

Through planting seeds, tending to our classroom garden, and even tasting some of the fruits of the trees, we’re fostering a deep connection to nature and to the Jewish values of stewardship and gratitude.

Today, our preschoolers transformed into postal workers, bringing the post office to life in the classroom! Through immersive dramatic play, they sorted letters, prepared mail for delivery, and worked together to make sure every 'package' found its way to its destination.

Even our sensory table joined the fun, featuring a mini town with a postman delivering mail through the kinetic sand streets. Dramatic play like this fosters creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while helping children make sense of the world around them. We love seeing their imaginations soar!

In the toddler room, creativity and skill-building come alive through process art! Recently, the toddlers explored using spray bottles filled with water to stick tissue paper onto a larger sheet of paper. This activity goes beyond creating beautiful art—it’s a powerful opportunity for growth.

Using spray bottles helps build hand strength, fine motor skills, and coordination as little hands press the trigger to release water. Watching the tissue paper stick and colors bleed fosters curiosity, cause-and-effect understanding, and problem-solving.

At Bright Lights Early Learning Center, we are always amazed by the creativity and problem-solving skills that come alive through dramatic play and loose parts exploration! 🎶✨ Recently, our preschoolers used blocks and rhythm sticks to create their very own drums and bands, showcasing the power of imagination and collaboration.

This kind of play offers so much more than fun—it fosters essential developmental skills like fine and gross motor coordination, social-emotional growth through teamwork, and cognitive development as they make decisions and explore cause and effect. It also supports language development as children engage in storytelling and communication while they play.

Developing Fine Motor Skills: The Power of the Pincer Grip

In our infant and toddler classrooms, small hands are hard at work mastering one of the most important fine motor skills: the **pincer grip**! This skill—the ability to pinch and hold objects between the thumb and index finger—lays the foundation for so many essential tasks, from feeding and dressing to writing and drawing as children grow.

You might notice infants carefully picking up tiny pieces of food during snack time or toddlers using their fingers to place beads on a string or pick up small loose parts. These seemingly simple actions are big milestones in their fine motor development!

Here’s why developing the pincer grip matters:
