Transformative Justice Project of Colorado

TJP of Colorado provides a wide range of services aimed at supporting system-impacted youth age 10-25 Central to our work is youth advocacy and direct support.

TJP's mission is to abolish the school-to-prison pipeline by dismantling systemic racism embedded in the existing institutions of education, mental health, and criminal injustice, while helping young people to develop the tools to define their own story. Our programs encompass a wide range of services aimed at supporting system-involved youth aged 10 to 25. We provide wraparound services including

mental health, court and education advocacy, assistance with job applications and resumes, and help with housing and resource navigation. Additionally, our program Education First provides legal representation for issues arising from school-related incidents, while our Believe in Youth program aids in record expungement.

We would like you to meet our undergraduate intern, Elliana White!

Ellie is originally from Boulder, Colorado. She is an undergraduate at Northwestern University studying Legal Studies and Communications. Ellie is interested in public policy that impacts young people most at risk of having contact with the justice system -- and joined Transformative Justice Project to further their work in pushing towards a reformed system rooted in racially just, developmentally appropriate, and strengths-focused policies. She is especially interested in the prevention end of the continuum, though is always eager to learn more about intervention, detention, and the legal system. She has served on the Emerging Leaders Committee of Colorado’s Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Council and has conducted research on undiagnosed and unaddressed learning differences as a contributor to the pipeline. Ellie hopes to spread awareness about the school-to-prison pipeline and the role that schools can play in fueling the disproportionate mass incarceration of black and brown kids in the justice system. Ellie joined in hopes to provide a student voice and advocate for youth in Colorado. In her free time, Ellie enjoys playing tennis, playing with Sweet Coconut Bernard (her cat), and watching Modern Family.

Although we weren't able to introduce her here while she was with us, we don't want the summer to end without celebrating Sophie Link, who recently wrapped up a summer internship with the Transformative Justice Project of Colorado!

Sophie Link grew up in the Denver area and recently graduated summa cm laude from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with degrees in Public Affairs and the Study of Religion. Throughout college, she worked in criminal defense, juvenile justice, and criminal justice research, including projects with Loyola Law School’s Center for Juvenile Law & Policy, the UCLA Social Justice Research Partnership, and a Colorado criminal defense firm. At TJP, Sophie helped develop accessible resources for youth and families navigating the juvenile legal system and she was instrumental in upgrading our LYRIC curriculum to include modules on digital privacy and probation rights. She is passionate about advancing fairness and opportunity for young people impacted by the justice system in Colorado, where she hopes to return after completing her J.D. This fall, Sophie will begin her legal studies at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

We're grateful for the work Sophie contributed to TJP and for the resources she leaves behind that will continue supporting youth and families.

Huge thank you to Project Bridge Colorado at University of Colorado Anschutz for joining us at our July community night. Our families learned how to extract DNA from strawberries and some interesting and fun facts about molecular biology. 🧪

TJP recently joined and .tribe.adventures for a panel discussion at Karsh Hagan’s offices about the importance of ensuring systems-impacted youth have access to the outdoors, community, and experiences that foster healing and joy.

Those conversations don’t end when the panel is over.

This Saturday, August 1, The Transformative Justice Project of Colorado, Vibe Tribe Foundation, and Karsh Hagan are putting those values into practice by partnering for Beach Day at the Aurora Reservoir.

For systems-impacted youth, access to nature, recreation, and spaces where they can simply laugh, play, and connect isn’t just about having fun. These experiences support healing, build community, and remind young people that they deserve joy, too.

We’re grateful for partnerships that move beyond talking about what’s possible and instead create opportunities for young people to experience it firsthand.

In June, our Believe In Youth program director Tiera Brown attended “Unite for Justice”, the Expunge Colorado legal mixer and fundraiser, and had the opportunity to connect with their Executive Director Melanie Rose Rodgers.

Here are a few words from Tiera regarding the event and the future of our Believe in Youth program:

“It was inspiring to be in a room filled with attorneys, advocates, and community leaders who share the common belief that a criminal record should not become a lifelong barrier to opportunity.

I’m especially excited to share that the Transformative Justice Project of Colorado’s Believe in Youth program and Expunge Colorado look forward to collaborating to make record sealing and expungement more accessible for Coloradans across our state. By working together, we can help ensure that more people understand their rights, navigate the legal process, and move beyond the collateral consequences of a criminal record.

As the new Director of Believe in Youth, I’m also excited to announce the next chapter of the program.

Historically, Believe in Youth has focused on helping young people charged with juvenile unlawful sexual behavior offenses obtain record relief. While that work remains critically important, we are expanding our vision.

Over the coming year, Believe in Youth will begin growing into a broader record-clearing initiative that serves both youth and adults eligible for relief under Colorado law. Our goal is to increase access to record sealing and expungement for a wider range of eligible offenses while continuing to center the unique needs of young people impacted by the legal system.

I’m grateful to Melanie and the Expunge Colorado team for their leadership and for fostering collaboration in this work. Together I believe we can build a Colorado where second chances are an expectation and not an exception.

Our Food Pantry now reaches over 50 TJP families per month. We are so lucky to have secured partnerships with The Food Bank of the Rockies, We Don’t Waste, and I Support The Girls. We already have great storage and a freezer, but now we need a refrigerator to ensure our TJP families have access to fresh produce. Let us know if you can help! The Transformative Justice Project of Colorado is now a partner with Food Bank of the Rockies and we will have our Summer Food Service Program every Wednesday at the TJP offices for our youth and families.

This program is being offered in addition to Tony's Food Pantry which allows our youth and families to schedule drop-ins to shop for food, toiletries, diapers, wipes, and more!
