Happy Independence Day, Earth! A million miles away on this day in 1997, the unmanned Mars Pathfinder reached the Red Planet exactly 7 months after launching on December 4, 1996. It dropped a wheeled device, called the Sojourner, that roamed across the surface of Mars taking photographs and collecting data on the geology and chemical composition of the planet’s rocks and soils.
