Denver Open Media is an amazing place. Since I was introduced to this place in 2016 by my friend Matthew Cahn, I have learned so much about broadcast production and the power of media. I was able to produce Civic Matters to contribute to the process of democracy by educating the public about civic issues.

It brought me a lot of sadness to know it is struggling to survive because Denver city Mayor Michael B. Hancock decided that open, fair access to media for the public is not important and decided to take back control and control the content too. This is literally fascism in the making in my view.

People like Tony Shawcross Ann Theis George Jameson Courville and many others worked tirelessly to build a commercial grade station and a facility that is being modeled by other public access stations around the country. Shows like Democracy Now! and Civic Matters cannot survive if not for public access stations like Denver Open Media. Many local musicians were able to showcase their talents because of this place.

The decision to cut their funding, take their equipment was done without the consultation with the public who are the main benefactors of a place like this. Their Youth program is awesome and I was hoping to have my girl join as soon as she becomes old enough. Their film school program @$500 is an amazing opportunity for those who can not afford all the student debt to gain practical industry skills and their intern programs help young people to get real experience in working in the media.

I am writing to seek my fellow Denverites' support to talk to your legislator and city council members to let them know how important this is and am also very open for any idea we can get funding to keep this place open in the meantime.

I am volunteering to host the Denver Mayoral Debates as well as all the city council debates to bring the public the knowledge about their candidates and without a facility like this, we could not have done this. Many of the candidates had no idea about what's happening about the threat of public access stations like DOM are under.
