Students, if you ever encounter any type of discrimination, from a teacher or peer please know that LSU has your back and will not tolerate this. We will advocate until something is done. Currently with this situation we are still talking to the principal and more staff. We will not let this slide. We will make sure that teachers are held accountable. Your voice matters, we can only change things if you speak up, if you stand up for a class mate, don't be a bistandard, speak up.

We were made aware that Monday morning, a teacher at East High School informed their students that, "(This school) is an English-ONLY environment!" after repeatedly harassing a student about speaking Spanish to their friends and later singling them out to ridicule them. Students responded by immediately speaking with the principal to insist that action be taken and were told that the teacher would be spoken to about the situation.
We are clear that this erasure of culture and bullying of students is not only an abuse of power for what should be a trusting relationship, but also one rooted in both overt and systemic racism. As this type of behavior increases across the country, we are reminded of the days when Spanish was outlawed in schools and the activity still going on today of banning Xicanx and Latinx authors in schools as highlighted by the current court case in Arizona. These behaviors are not only inexcusable, but contribute to forcing marginalized students into the shadows and challenging the various cultures of their student population.
In a district in which roughly 55.5% of students identify as Hispanic or Latinx and which has failed and continues to struggle in meeting the federally-mandated consent decree to adequately resource and service English language learners, this behavior is especially troubling. We're also reminded of moments last year when some students were using vitriolic and racist language against Black students at East and the reports out of DPS that acknowledge that Black and brown students are disciplined significantly more aggressively than their white counterparts. The actions by this school can't simply end in one conversation with the teacher and sweeping the issue under the rug. There must be a process that includes students and community and something must be done to address the fact that this teacher has cultivated an unsafe environment for their students which reflects larger patterns within the district and this school in particular.
Denver Justice Project stands with the students of East and we encourage our community to contact administrations at East High School and Denver Public Schools to demand swift and significant action be taken on this issue immediately.
Come out! Support! Today!!
