We are the Economics Department in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science at DU.

A quote attributed to a Chinese curse states, "May you live in interesting times!" Today’s global economic landscape certainly offers an interesting time in which to study economics. Politicians, policy makers and even the economics profession itself offer differing views on how to stabilize and sustain economic growth and development. In our BA major and minor, as well as in our MA program and 4+

This week's is Kimberly Guevara, a undergraduate student double-majoring in and public policy, who first came to the University of Denver in 2021 before serving as a missionary in Colombia for the next two years. Guevara returned to DU in Fall 2024, where she started to understand her fields of study: “Economics is everywhere - education, schools, urban planning, health, policy and so much more. This field can help answer many questions and when practiced ethically, it can help in uplifting communities," Guevara said.

Guevara's career goals include seeking more equitable economic systems, drawing from her experiences in and Colombia. “I want to work across the globe to help communities access resources that allow them to have better livelihoods and increased economic stability through education and employment," she said.

A thought for the New Year: college remains worth it (https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrismuller/2024/12/29/new-research-reveals-true-value-of-college-education/).

A college education that teaches critical thinking and offers access to a broad range of knowledge to allow students to find and develop their passions should be accessible to all. There is more to a college education than career readiness, though that is also an important aspect.

Even just on the narrow question of whether it is financially worth it, however, the answer continues to be "yes." The total cost of a substantial loan to go to college is less than the expected additional lifetime earnings. Yes, even that liberal arts social science degree pays off!

That said, students should seek financial aid and subsidized loans as well as consider the actual cost of attendance for them to find an option that works for them. Also, finishing your degree is of utmost importance and how an institution supports you to ensure degree completion matters.

There are impressive individual examples of success for people who skip college, of course, but they are rare and not representative. On average, you will be better off going to college - and we all will be better off when the average level of education and ability to critically evaluate information across the population are greater.

All the best for 2025!

One of our majors was last week's !

Today's is Jonathan Flores, a undergraduate student in the and Social Policy 4+1 program. He says, "The most impactful aspect of CAHSS is its critical approach to addressing social science fields. CAHSS does not simply accept the world for what it is and linearly attempt to address its goals; instead, it considers several perspectives, and I highly respect that."
