Paula Burns McEvoy, Faia, Leed® Fellow, Leed Faculty, Associate Principal at Perkins + Will
Paula is Co-director of Perkins+Will's firmwide Sustainable Design Initiative. Paula is a LEED Fellow and LEED Faculty member. She is also a Fellow of The American Institute of Architects, was the 2016 Chair of the AIA National Committee on the Environment (COTE) and Co-chair of the AIA National Materials Knowledge Group.
Her presentation will give participants insights into the impacts buildings can have on occupants as well as constructors and manufacturers. Often, these health impacts are unnoticed since they can be caused or mitigated by everyday objects and situations. This is particularly important in environments designed for children, who are still developing their minds and bodies. Participants will learn how to use tools and research to make informed, more healthful design decisions.
Learning Objectives:
Understand how the built-environment impacts human health and well-being.
Explain the impact of school environments on health and development of children and adolescents.
Review how and where toxic substances may be found in building materials.
Explore strategies for researching the contents of typical building materials.

We're excited to announce Marcus Adrian, AIA, LEED BD+C & Matthew Roeder, AIA of Mackey Mitchell Architects will be speaking at the 2018 Early Childhood Design Conference.
You won't want to miss this talk!
Designing for Young Children as Sensory Beings
Session 5 on Friday, 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, HSW
Marcus Adrian, AIA, LEED BD+C, Matthew Roeder, AIA
All learning is sensory. Regardless of age, the only way to get information into the brain is through the seven senses. As our understanding of human sensory ability grows, it is increasingly important to understand each school or center as a sensory environment. This presentation will explore sensory ability as one of five dimensions of human development and provide a designer's perspective on strategies to balance stimulation in every kind of space. In addition to overall design strategies, we will present simple and practical ideas to equip designers, caregivers, and center directors to make better use of space. We will share case studies to explore current trends and strategies for learning and play spaces.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will be able to discuss sensory ability in context with the other four dimensions of human ability, and how it changes as children grow and develop.
With a more detailed understanding of human sensory ability, attendees will see their own spaces through a more deliberate and creative lends, to identify problems and spark solutions
Attendees will be better attuned to sensory balance in learning and play spaces, able to create connections that improve transitioning and separations that prevent over-stimulation
Attendees will understand how to use color, texture, lighting and acoustics to improve attention in (and in-between) learning spaces
Marcus Adrian
ECE Marcus is an Architect and Managing Principal of Mackey Mitchell Architects in St. Louis, Missouri. He has dedicated 20 years of his career to mastering the design of learning spaces, from birth through higher education, and across all levels of human ability. Through his design work at Mackey Mitchell and his own volunteer and research work, Marcus has collaborated with over 20 different organizations that offer services for people with a wide range of developmental needs.
His research and design work have been published and presented widely. In 2009, the American Speech-Language Hearing Association brought Marcus to Capitol Hill to brief members of the 11th US Congress on the fundamentals of classroom acoustics. In 2017 he presented to an audience of 1,800 at TEDx Gateway Arch, and more recently described his life journey and design philosophy on John O'Leary's national podcast, Live Inspired. Marcus holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame.
Matthew Roeder
ECE Matthew is an Architect and Senior Associate with Mackey Mitchell Architects in St. Louis, Missouri. He has a passion for creating innovative learning environments for early childhood and higher education, including renovation and new construction. His work includes the design of several early child care centers on large corporate campuses, where technical skills and knowledge of early learning centers allowed him to discover the balance between children and their caregivers.
As a deacon at August Gate Church, Matthew has worked closely with church leaders to program and design the renovation of the children's wing, which will serve the church and the local community when complete. He is currently volunteering as the church's construction liaison for the transformation of a 90-year-old building.
Matthew was born and raised in St. Louis, where he resides with his wife Lynette and three daughters under the age of four.
We look forward to seeing you at the 2018 Early Childhood Design Conference!
