This week, we welcomed our students and families back to campus, and there was no shortage of happy reunions! Seeing children walk through the doors and return to their teachers, friends, and classrooms is one of our favorite reminders of what makes this community so special.

A new chapter for some very special spaces at MSD! 🎉 Our community gathered to celebrate the grand opening of our new Welcome Center, Library, and Lower Elementary classrooms, including our Spark Studio innovation lab – all thoughtfully designed to support connection, curiosity, and joyful learning. This summer’s construction marked Phase One of our 20-year Campus Master Plan, laying the groundwork for an evolving campus that will support our growing Elementary and Middle School programs and future generations of MSD graduates.

As part of our annual set up week team building activity, our faculty and staff worked with Wish For Wheels to build new bikes for our second grade friends at Ellis Elementary! We’re so excited that these bikes will soon bring some extra wheels, freedom, confidence, and joy to our local community. 🚲💛 We’ll be back at Ellis in September to celebrate the students and their new bikes!

Looking back on our final MSD Summer Camp session – what an amazing way to finish an incredible summer of dynamic learning! ☀️ From the very first day of camp to the final Water Day, we've watched our campers build friendships, grow in confidence, explore new ideas, and discover the joy of learning through hands-on experiences. Whether they were creating art, exploring cultures from around the world, preparing for Lower Elementary, or simply making new friends, every camper helped make this summer one to remember. We are saddened to share that our dear friend and former MSD Head of School Sonnie McFarland passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. Sonnie held so many roles in life. She was a dancer, a daughter, a wife, a parent, a grandmother and great-grandmother, a friend, an educator, a mentor, a head of school, a world-renowned presenter and an author of three award-winning books translated into multiple languages.

Sonnie created and designed a Montessori curriculum to teach peaceful living skills to share with children ages 3-12 and became a global lecturer through this work. She was recognized as the 2011 Living Legacy Honoree through the American Montessori Society and traveled the world spreading her passion for peace in the classroom and at home. This photo was taken during Sonnie's attendance at the AMS 65th Anniversary Gala in Denver in 2025 with her daughter, Jeannie - a celebration of the community she helped shape and inspire. Her love light will be dearly missed by so many.

Please join us for a Celebration of Sonnie’s life on Monday, July 27th at 11am at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 2201 Dexter St, Denver, CO 80207.

Let us join together in community to honor Sonnie and share memories of her amazing life. Please bring a dish to share and a story to tell. We will spend time sharing and reflecting on the many, many lessons Sonnie has blessed us with.

We're halfway through another incredible session of MSD Summer Camp! ☀️ Our Pre-Toddlers are becoming more comfortable with their classroom routines while growing new friendships each day. Across campus, our Primary campers kicked off the next part of their “Around the World in 30 Days” adventure with a visit to Europe through hands-on art projects, fun stories, and a special tea party inspired by their lessons on England.
