The mission of Lincoln Charter School is to facilitate the development of college ready individuals through emphasis on rigorous academics and our community expectations: honesty, respect, empathy, responsibility, service and preparedness. Lincoln Charter School obtained its charter in 1998 and has two campus locations in Lincoln County. The Denver and Lincolnton campuses both consists of K-12 programs.

As part of HBCU Week, we’re highlighting members of our Eagle Nation community who know firsthand what makes the HBCU experience so special!

James Vinson, an LCS grandparent, attended Winston-Salem State University, where he studied Political Science. Pictured with James is his wife, who was a Winston-Salem State cheerleader during their time at WSSU.

For James, attending an HBCU was about more than getting a college education. He appreciated that his professors held him accountable not only as a student, but as a young Black man. He felt that he represented more than himself and was learning about the history, culture and experiences of those who came before him.

His time at WSSU also gave him the opportunity to learn more about himself and think about how he wanted to impact his community. As James put it, the experience was about having the tools to succeed while understanding the importance of giving back. His takeaway from WSSU was captured in the motto: “Enter to learn, depart to serve.”

For students thinking about college, here’s James’s advice: “College will be an important part of your life. You will meet new friends, meet new challenges and learn more about yourself. There are many opportunities to become part of organizations, play sports, complete internships and get involved in your community.”

As part of HBCU Week, we’re highlighting members of our Eagle Nation community who know firsthand what makes the HBCU experience so special!

Amanda McDowell, an LCS parent of a current senior and a Class of 2022 alum, attended Winston-Salem State University, where she studied Business Management.

For Amanda, attending WSSU was about more than earning a degree. She found a strong sense of community, culture and belonging, while receiving a quality education and making lifelong connections. Being surrounded by people who shared similar experiences helped her build confidence and pride.

If you’re thinking about going to college, Amanda’s advice is to get involved, build relationships and ask for help!

By sharing experiences like Amanda’s, we hope to give our students a glimpse into the HBCU experience and help them explore the many paths available to them after high school.

Yesterday, our high school student-led clubs, Youth in Action and Democracy + Donuts, teamed up for a voter registration drive. 🦅

Together, they had around 42 voter-information interactions, 10 completed voter registrations, and handed out 96 donuts. 👏 We love seeing our students take the initiative to learn, connect, and make an impact!

It’s National HBCU Week! This week, Lincoln Charter is connecting our high school students with HBCU representatives from across North Carolina. 🎓

Students had the opportunity to learn more about Winston-Salem State University and North Carolina A&T State University, ask questions, and explore what each university has to offer.
