Learning begins with what the learner is interested in and wonders about. As High School Students in Denver’s La Alma neighborhood, we wondered why our arts classes are disappearing. We wondered why young people are treated so differently than adults. Why is learning so much different in public schools than it is in the adult world? We offer fellow students a new way to learn, by taking control of our own learning. Students select and hire our own teachers, selected from the community. In the process, we learn how to use our minds well, what excellence is, how to do something really well, how people in different cultures express and celebrate what life means to them, how to make things, how to take advantage of opportunities, and why things are the way they are. In the adult world, performance is not measured simply with timed tests, and just as surgeons are not evaluated simply in terms of the quickness with which they can treat patients, so for us it’s the results that count, not simply how long it took to achieve them or how correctly we filled in the bubbles. Adults know and have a say in the performance standards against which they are being measured, so we should know and help set the standards against which we are measured. In the adult world, achievement has value beyond its demonstration, so we demonstrate our skills in the context of doing something important. It gives us a chance to take the lead on our own learning. It gives community teachers a chance to help our schools operate more efficiently. We have the plan. We just need the resources to get this program off the ground and start making a difference in our fellow students’ lives. We hope you'll consider joining us.
