☕ A New Chapter is Brewing for Aguilar's Historic State Bank!

After more than two decades on Colorado's Most Endangered Places, the historic Gianella Building in Aguilar, Colorado, may be one step closer to a brighter future!

Constructed in 1912 and once home to Aguilar's only bank, this historic landmark was listed on Colorado's Most Endangered Places in 2004. Today, the building remains without a roof and exposed to the elements, but a new community-driven effort hopes to change that.

The vision? Transform the historic building into Hooper's Coffee, a welcoming coffee shop and gathering place that celebrates Aguilar's history while bringing new life to its Main Street!

Led by Tim Hooper, the project is preparing to launch a $100,000 Kickstarter campaign to help secure the building, protect it from further deterioration, continue rehabilitation efforts, and take the first steps toward making Hooper's Coffee a reality.

❤️ Want to help make this vision a reality? Follow the Kickstarter campaign to stay informed about its upcoming launch, and be sure to follow Tim as he works to bring new life to this historic Colorado landmark!

🍻🏛️ History is on tap in Trinidad!

The Bloom Block was constructed in 1888 by pioneer merchant Frank Bloom as part of Trinidad’s growth as a coal-producing hub along the Santa Fe Trail. Over the decades, the building housed shops, offices, a hotel, and a grocery store. The building also survived fires in 1904 and 1910, yet still retains much of its historic interior fabric. Bloom Block recently became The Well Hotel & Taproom under current owners Keely Williams and Jason Decker. The recently completed work phases, funded by the State Historical Fund, preserved the historic façade, sandstone foundation, wood flooring, and other original materials while gently cleaning the masonry and upgrading exits and other features for modern safety and accessibility. The project maintains Bloom Block’s historic character while adapting the building for continued community use as a contemporary hotel and taproom.

🎉🏛️ $750,000 FOR RURAL COLORADO!

Colorado Preservation, Inc. has been awarded a $750,000 Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant from the National Park Service to launch a new round of preservation grants for rural communities across Colorado! 🙌

And we already know what this kind of investment can do!

When CPI launched our first Rural Revitalization Subgrant Program in 2023, we awarded $611,315 to eight projects across Colorado, supporting everything from a community gathering space and arts center to a heritage center and Veterans Center. Those grants helped leverage more than $3 MILLION in additional owner investment. 🏘️💪

Now, we get to do it again!

This new funding will help tackle critical needs at historic buildings while supporting the communities that give them life. Preservation can mean new businesses, gathering spaces, jobs, heritage tourism, community services, and renewed investment in the places people call home.

📣 Rural Colorado, we’re looking at you!

CPI anticipates opening applications for the new round of funding in May, during Historic Preservation Month. More information is coming, so stay tuned!

🌾🏛️ A community nearly lost to time is preparing to welcome visitors once again.

On Colorado’s northeastern plains, Dearfield tells an extraordinary story of Black entrepreneurship, agriculture, land ownership, and community.

Founded by O.T. Jackson, Dearfield grew into a thriving Black agricultural settlement in Weld County, offering African American families an opportunity to own land and build lives of their own. For a time, the community flourished, but drought and changing agricultural conditions contributed to its decline by the early 1930s. Today, only a few of Dearfield’s original structures remain.

Years of work by dedicated preservationists and community partners are helping bring new life to the site. O.T. Jackson’s historic filling station has been preserved and is preparing to reopen with exhibits, interpretation, and historic objects that let visitors experience Dearfield’s history firsthand.

🎥 As part of Colorado 150, CBS Colorado is sharing Dearfield’s remarkable story and highlighting the people working to ensure it continues to be told.

This year, CBS Colorado and Colorado Preservation, Inc. are partnering to raise awareness and funds for historic places across our state. Your support helps CPI work alongside communities to advocate for endangered places, connect projects with preservation resources, and ensure that the full breadth of Colorado’s history remains part of our future.

Trinity United Methodist will open their doors for a lecture today, September 24, at 7:00pm. The lecture will be given by Jane Watkins of Watkins Stained Glass, a 5 generation award winning artisan family. They are historic cornerstones of Denver’s stained glass heritage.

Colorado Preservation, Inc. will have a table at Trinity during the lecture, so come say hello and learn how we're working to save Colorado's historic places.

If you miss the lecture, you can step inside Trinity United Methodist Church - one of Denver's great Gothic Revival landmarks during Doors Open Denver, September 24 to 27! Trinity United Methodist Church was designed in 1888 by Robert S. Roeschlaub, Colorado's first licensed architect. Look up at the 181-foot spire, take in the stained glass by Healy and Millet of Chicago, and listen for the historic Roosevelt pipe organ, one of only twelve known in the country.

🎉🇯🇵 An incredible honor, officially presented!

Earlier this year, we shared the exciting news that longtime Amache advocate and preservationist John Hopper had been selected to receive Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays. Now, we’re thrilled to celebrate John following the official conferment ceremony!

On September 18, Consul-General Okajima presented John with the honor at the Consul-General's official residence in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States through the preservation of Japanese American history.

Mr. Hopper founded the Amache Preservation Society in 1993 while teaching at Granada High School, beginning decades of work with his students to preserve, research, and share Amache's history. Those efforts helped build greater understanding of the site and ultimately contributed to Amache’s designation as a National Historic Site in 2024.

Colorado Preservation, Inc. has been incredibly fortunate to work alongside John and the Amache community through the years, and we could not be happier to see his decades of dedication recognized with such a remarkable honor.

👏 Congratulations, Mr. Hopper! Thank you for everything you have done to ensure the stories of Amache continue to be remembered, shared, and preserved for generations to come.

🥔 Preserving history, one potato barn at a time!

In 2019, the Adobe Potato Cellars of the San Luis Valley were listed among Colorado’s Most Endangered Places, resulting in preservation projects throughout the region. One such project was the Garcia Potato Barn, established near Antonito in the 1880s, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 2021, CPI has partnered with Reyes Garcia, the current owner and descendant of the original owners, for a series of State Historical Fund grants to support emergency stabilization, construction documents, a roof replacement, and adobe restoration. The project team included Scheuber + Darden Architects and Ernesto “Ernie” Romero, a local contractor with decades of experience working with traditional Hispano structures in the region.

Just completed in 2026 thanks to the support of CPI, the State Historical Fund, the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area, and other partners, the Garcia Potato Barn is a preservation success story that provides a tangible link to the San Luis Valley’s rich Hispano heritage. The barn will now be used to educate the community about rural agricultural life and the impact of Hispano culture on the development of Southern Colorado.
