We’re thrilled to feature excerpts from the extraordinary La Mulata de Córdoba, choreographed by Amalia Viviana Basanta Hernández, Artistic Director of Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández.

Viviana carries forward the remarkable artistic legacy of her mother, Amalia Hernández, whose groundbreaking work brought Mexican folkloric dance to audiences around the world. A powerful artistic voice in her own right, Viviana continues to honor that legacy while creating work with an unmistakably international impact. ✨

The Legend of La Mulata de Córdoba-

According to legend, during the time of the Inquisition in Córdoba, Veracruz, a beautiful mulatta woman used herbs and traditional medicines to heal the sick. Though the Church viewed her practices with suspicion, she continued to attend Mass to avoid attracting attention.
When the Governor of the region fell in love with her and she rejected him, he retaliated by denouncing her to the Inquisition. Imprisoned for witchcraft and sentenced to burn at the stake, she asked a guard for a piece of chalk. On the prison wall, she drew a magnificent boat. Then, in a moment of magic, she stepped into her drawing, sailed away—and disappeared.

What a beautiful video to share the story of our new CPRD Center for the Healing Arts!

As many folks see and feel when walking into our new space, the concept of "Sankofa" is designed into the way we connect the legacy of our beloved state and federal landmark, the Historic Shorter AME Facility, and the new space. The West African bird icon has feet moving forward with head turned back to know where you are going and from where you come.

There is a throughline of legacy in two dancers in this video: Professor Emeritus Gary Abbott who danced in the CPRD Ensemble for 10 years, taught at the University of Missouri Kansas City's dance program, co-founded Deeply Rooted Dance Theater in Chicago...AND is a Guggenheim Fellow! Many of you remember seeing Max Nelson-Steinhoff grow up on our stage...he spent most o his life in the CPRD Academy (his mother took classes here too, and younger sister is currently a student). Max is now a professional member of the CPRD Ensemble after graduating from Gary Abbott's program, and is in his second season.

Our 13 stars gave it all they had last night and helped us raise resources for CPRD Arts-In-Education school outreach programs across the Denver Metro area! (We will have a total for you soon!)
