LAEF CEO Nick Lopez traded the office for the ring… well, the dance floor… for this year’s Dancing with the Stars! 🌟

And he came ready to fight for something worth celebrating: our students and their futures.

Speaking of champions, the night brought together two legacy organizations with a shared commitment to showing up for our community and creating opportunities for the next generation.

Then came the punches. The jumps. And one final KNOCKOUT. 🥊💥

Today, we celebrate Women's Equality Day — and the fearless women who helped start our organization. They opened doors so today's scholars could walk through them.

At LAEF, we believe education is one of the most powerful forms of equity there is. Every scholarship isn't just tuition — it's a door held open. A future where a young woman's zip code, income, or immigration status doesn't decide how far she can go.

As LAEF has grown, one thing has never changed: who we show up for.
Year after year — through every phase of growth — the majority of LAEF scholars are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. This year, 81% of our new scholars are first-generation college students. That's not a coincidence. It's the mission.
For 76 years, LAEF has believed that education creates generational change. The growth we're celebrating this week is only possible because of the students who trusted us with their sueños — and kept going anyway.
And soon, we'll be meeting the next wave. This fall, LAEF will welcome our new class of scholars at our annual Scholar Symposium — the moment where this year's numbers become faces, stories, and futures. We can't wait to introduce you to them.

At LAEF, every scholarship dollar goes further — because we don't invest alone.
Since 1989, LAEF's Colorado Higher Education Partnership has brought together colleges and universities across the state to match our scholarship awards. That means when a student receives a LAEF scholarship, their institution invests alongside us — amplifying the impact and deepening the commitment to their success.
This year, that partnership helped turn $650,000 in LAEF scholarships into over $1 million in total support for 184 scholars across Colorado.

This year, LAEF welcomed its largest incoming class of new scholars in organizational history. For 15 years, LAEF never surpassed 55 new scholars in a single year. This year, we nearly doubled that.
More students. More families. More futures.

LAEF is celebrating its greatest leap yet.
For years, our annual scholarship awards held steady — a consistent, meaningful investment in Colorado students. This year, we didn't just grow. We made history.
The 2026–2027 academic year marks the largest scholarship investment in LAEF's 76-year history: $650,000 awarded to 184 scholars across Colorado. A 62% increase from last year alone.
When matched by our Colorado Higher Education Partners (Colorado State University System, University of Northern Colorado, UNC, Regis University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Colorado System, Colorado Mesa University, Western Colorado University, Adams State University, and Front Range Community College), that investment grows to over $1 million — because when LAEF believes in a student, Colorado's colleges and universities do too.

LAEF is proud to welcome two exceptional leaders to our Board of Directors: Andrea Albo and Erin Salazar.

Andrea brings more than 27 years of public service leadership experience, helping shape policies, strengthen systems, and improve outcomes for communities across Colorado. Her commitment to people-centered leadership and community impact will be a tremendous asset to our organization. Andrea currently serves as Executive Director of the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District - SCFD and previously held leadership roles at Denver International Airport, the Denver Sheriff Department, and the Denver Department of Human Services.

Erin Salazar joins the board as an LAEF alumna whose journey reflects the power of educational opportunity and community investment. Through her work in philanthropy and community engagement, Erin continues to help open doors for others while staying deeply connected to the organizations and communities that helped shape her own path. Erin serves as Director of Communications & Community Liaison at the Salazar Family Foundation, where she leads efforts focused on education, family stability, and creating opportunities for Colorado communities.

Together, Andrea and Erin bring a powerful combination of leadership, service, and lived experience that will help guide LAEF's mission forward. We are honored to welcome them to the board and look forward to the impact they will make alongside our scholars, alumni, and community.

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to Crestina Martinez for her dedicated service to LAEF. As she finishes her term on our Board, we are deeply thankful for her contributions.
