He designed assistive technology to help people with blindness navigate the world. He started a Science Fair Club to mentor peers through the process. He's a member of the , a legacy of the original Tuskegee Airmen. And he's done all of this while managing a lupus diagnosis he received after a stroke his freshman year.
Next fall, he heads to to study electrical engineering and computer science, with a clear vision: social entrepreneurship driven by humanitarian impact.
Sudents who don't just learn the material, but use it to solve real problems for real people, is what DSST's mission looks like in practice.

In 2011, DSST: Cole opened its doors. Ben Garfield was in that first high school class β and he knew the weight of what his class was carrying.
Ben and his 74 classmates weren't just earning diplomas. They were writing a story.
Today, Ben works in communications at Colorado PERA and is completing his MBA at CU Boulder. He credits DSST's interdisciplinary approach for preparing him to thrive across academic formats β and its core values for getting him through the hard moments.
"I still look at the world through that lens, hoping to not just find success for myself but to ensure that those around me do too."

When 27 leaders from Washington state want to see what top-performing schools look like, they come to Colorado β and they come to DSST: Cedar Middle & High Schoolπ
Last week, Colorado Senator James Coleman joined those leaders as they visited our middle school classrooms firsthand. What they saw stopped them in their tracks: Cedar students asking deep, thoughtful questions and driving their own learning.
This is what a 6β12 journey looks like from the very beginning. It starts here, in middle school, with curiosity, courage, and a community that believes every student has something powerful to say.

Giselle Garcia-Gonzalez walked into DSST: Montview High School as a student. Today, she walks into DSST: Elevate Northeast High School as a math teacher β and this year's Distinguished Alumni Torch Bearer Award recipient. π
As a first-gen college student and daughter of immigrants, Giselle didn't just find academic rigor at DSST. She found teachers who truly knew her β by name, by potential, by heart. Mr. Chan. Mr. Heffron. Ms. Walker. She can name every one of them and tell you exactly how they changed her life. Now she's that teacher for someone else.
"I can confidently say that DSST lives its mission," she said when accepting the award. We think that says it all.

At 12 years old, Evan Sauls made a deliberate choice to repeat 6th grade so he could attend DSST: Montview. That single act of courage set everything in motion. Today, Evan is an aerospace engineer at Sierra Space β building satellites and working on Dream Chaser, a next-generation spaceplane. He's the 2026 recipient of DSST's Distinguished Alumni Trailblazer Award.
"DSST helped make my dreams come true," Evan said. "Now my projects impact more than just my grades." This is what STEM education looks like when it's done right β rigorous, hands-on, and deeply human.

DSST is on NBC News, and our students truly shine as the STEM leaders of the future. Huge shoutout to Aurora Science & Tech High School senior Isis, who absolutely crushed it in this feature on future healthcare leaders. Isis shares her deeply moving personal journey, and the drive and brilliance of all DSST students are on full display.
This is what we mean when we say STEM Leaders of the Future. It starts in the classroom, in the lab, in the questions our students refuse to stop asking. And sometimes? It ends up on the news.
Donβt miss this one - give it a watch π https://hubs.la/Q04hzVz90
