Important Update: Concealed Handgun Permit Training Requirements Changing July 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2025, new standards will take effect for individuals applying for or renewing a permit to carry a concealed handgun. Here's what you need to know:

New Applicants Must:

• Complete an in-person handgun training course within 1 year of applying.
• Training must be taught by a verified instructor and include:
o Firearm and ammunition handling
o Safe storage and child safety
o Shooting fundamentals
o Federal and state firearm laws
o Use of deadly force for self-defense
o Safe interaction with law enforcement
o Conflict avoidance and use-of-force judgment
• Pass both a written exam and a live-fire exercise.
• The course must be at least 8 hours long.

Applicants can also show competence by holding a current peace officer certification.

Refresher courses must be:

• In-person
• Taught by a verified instructor
• Include updated law instruction
• Include a live-fire test and written exam
• Minimum 2 hours in length

Permit Renewals:

To renew a concealed carry permit, applicants can show handgun competence by:

• Being active military or a current peace officer
• Being a verified fi****ms instructor
• Showing honorable military discharge or retired law enforcement status (with pistol qualification in the past 10 years)
• Completing a refresher course (within 6 months before renewal)
• Participating in organized shooting competitions

Verified Instructors:

A county sheriff will verify fi****ms instructors based in their jurisdiction. To qualify, instructors must:

• Hold a valid concealed carry permit
• Be certified by a law enforcement agency, college, university, nationally recognized training organization, or fi****ms school

Disqualification Notice:

A permit will not be issued to anyone convicted of certain misdemeanors crimes.
