For this month’s , meet Diego! 📚🌎

This month, Hispanic Heritage Month, we are highlighting the student success in our Latino/a community, starting with Diego Garcia, a first-generation college student and immigrant.

Diego is set to graduate this Fall 2026 semester with a degree in Finance. From the moment he attended an MSU Denver open house, Diego knew he had found a place where he could belong and thrive. Seeing the diversity and inclusivity of the Roadrunner community, along with learning that MSU Denver is the largest Hispanic-Serving Institution in Colorado, made his decision even stronger ❤️💙

One of Diego’s most memorable experiences at MSU Denver has been earning a scholarship to study abroad in Vietnam and Thailand through the College of Business. He never imagined an opportunity like this would come his way, and he is incredibly grateful to have had the chance to represent MSU Denver. The experience opened his eyes to the world of global business and helped him build a level of confidence he didn’t have before.

Outside of the classroom, Diego is always on the go! He works two part-time jobs, including as a Diversity Project Assistant, where he works to create spaces where everyone feels valued and like they belong. He has been part of the Latinx Graduation Committee for the past two years and is currently leading HSI Week.

Diego has made an incredible impact on the MSU Denver community: attended MSU Denver Day at the Capitol to highlight the importance of investing in MSU Denver and support bill HB26-1317, received the IME Becas scholarship from the Mexican Consulate, was invited by the Immigrant Service Program to their MOU signing, and was selected to attend a graduate school visit in Seattle, Washington thanks to TRIO Support Services.

Diego leaves future Roadrunners with this advice: “The worst thing you can do is finish a class without ever talking to your classmates. You’ll be surprised by how many people genuinely want to see you succeed.”

From first-gen students to global learners, read to see who’s joining us this semester ⬇️

👉 33% are first-time to college students

👉 25% earned college credit before graduating high school (aka concurrent enrollment)

👉 33% are transfer students

👉 4.5% are out-of-state students

👉 21 are international students, representing 15 countries

🌍 Our international students come from Vietnam, Nepal, Brazil, Canada, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Mongolia, United Kingdom, Australia, China, Colombia, Cote D'Ivoire, Eswatini, Japan, and Lebanon!

👉 52% are first-gen, being one of the first in their families to attend college
