🤍wall space is valuable classroom real estate, so I like to be thoughtful about what earns a spot

some things support learning, some celebrate students, and some are simply there to add warmth, joy, and personality…all good reasons

but more isn’t always more

a little blank space gives the important things room to stand out and keeps our classrooms from feeling visually overwhelming

next up: what I actually prioritize having on my walls before Day 1…..spoiler - it’s not much 👀🤍

🤍okay we’ve practiced restraint long enough…now we can start making it cute😂

this is where our planning starts to shift from planning for function → planning for FUN

because we spend A LOT of time in our classrooms and so do our students

how the space feels matters. It should feel warm, welcoming, joyful, comfortable - a place where everyone genuinely wants to be

over the next few posts, we’re getting into walls, displays, additional decor, personality touches, and all those little details that make the space feel like ours - without losing the intention behind everything we’ve already planned

a classroom should work really well but it should feel really good to be in, too✨

🤍 a little peek inside how I actually plan my classroom layout before I move a single piece of furniture

because the goal is to plan enough N O W so setup is easier later ✨🤍

I always start with the space that does the most work

that’s usually my whole group zone + student workspace (this year it’s my intervention table and gathering space) and build from there

once that is set I work outward…placing the zones with the biggest functional needs first

the order helps, but none of these decisions happen in isolation

I’m constantly thinking about how the whole room works together

use what your room already gives you

be strategic about the needs of the zone - think about the storage or wall space it needs and let that guide you when placing it

the paper plan is a starting point, not a contract

once I’m in the room, I test it, tweak it, and move things around

the goal isn’t to have every inch figured out

it’s to walk into setup day with a plan instead of starting from scratch 🙌🏼✨

🤍this is where all of your planning starts to come together…

once you’ve identified your zones, systems, and solutions, it’s time to decide where everything belongs

every placement should have a purpose

the best classroom layouts don’t happen by accident…they’re built intentionally 🤍

✨🤍 kinda chic…but for classroom design 🫶🏼

🤍 every decision should have a purpose

☁️ routines are what keep great systems working

🪩 always buy with the purpose in mind

✨ if it keeps piling up, it probably needs a home

🙌🏼 students can’t use systems they’ve never been taught

☀️ accessibility should match how often you use it

💕 a good system answers the question before you do

🌿 good systems make hard days a little easier

✏️ more time teaching, less time looking for stuff

🤍 before I buy a bin or organize anything, these are some questions I think about…

if the answer is yes, the thinking stops here 😉

not every system needs to be redesigned, keep what already works well

start with the routine, not the storage

teacher? students? whole class? small groups?

who needs to access it and how often changes everything

the container should support the routine

caddies are great for items that need to be movable, open or clear bins are great for easy access, lidded bins are great for long-term storage

one cabinet . one rolling cart . one drawer unit . simplify whenever you can

shop your classroom before you shop the store

think about:

•the size of the zone
•student traffic
•nearby furniture
•how much room the system actually needs

built-in or available storage can often be the best solution, utilize it in a strategic way

the best solutions fit your students, your routines, your space, and your teaching style 🤍

I’m always here to help! 🫶🏼

🤍 this is my favorite part of the entire process

up until now, we’ve been identifying what our classroom needs. now we get to start deciding how we want each system to work 🙌🏼

what will you use? who needs access? how will students use it?

there isn’t one right answer. the goal is to choose thoughtful solutions that fit your space, your students, and the way you teach 🫶🏼🤍

🤍 it’s one of my favorite tricks for uncovering the classroom systems you didn’t even realize you needed

think of one paper that moves through your classroom often, then follow that paper from beginning to end

where does it start? where is it stored? how do students access it? where does it go when students are finished? is it collected, graded, returned, sent home, or filed away?

as you walk through every step of that paper’s journey, you’ll naturally uncover all of the little systems needed to make it work. don’t skip the small details, they’re usually where the best systems are hiding.

if you’d like to see exactly how I work through this process, I’ve saved a walkthrough in my classroom planning story highlight 🤍
