Dear "SIG-Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Education" Members,

You are invited to attend the business meeting for "SIG-Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Education". This year, for the first time, as part of AERA’s commitment to supporting and encouraging the active participation of all members of our SIGs and Divisions, we are providing an opportunity for unit members to attend their business meetings, whether or not you are attending the placed-based component of the Annual Meeting in Chicago on April 13-16.

Hi CTBE members,

I wanted to give you an update with a CTBE business meeting and a field trip to Chicago History Museum on April 16. Earlier this week, I received an email from AERA Central Office that a business meeting should be held in the place and time scheduled in the AERA program. The AERA business meetings this year are hybrid formats to let AERA members join in-person or online. Our SIG should abide by this policy and a business meeting, and a field trip will occur separately. A common theme exists in both gatherings in terms of cross-cultural conversation on the pursuit of truths.

Field Trip: Sunday, April 16, 12:30 – 2:00 pm CDT, Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St. (The group meet at The Guild Room, near the Gift Shop)

Business Meeting: Sunday, April 16, 2:50 – 4:20 pm CDT, Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Level 4, Chicago Ballroom VI

Drs. Charlie Tocci, Ann Marie Ryan, and Seungho Moon facilitate discussion on anti-racist, anti-oppressive pedagogy with the use of art/artifacts in Chicago History Museum. A field trip is a great hand-on activity to extend this conversation. If members cannot attend a field trip, virtual resources will be offered during the business meeting.

You should sign up for a field trip to Chicago History Museum via Google Form (click here). Registration fee to the Museum is covered by CTBE. I encourage you to promote both a business meeting and a field trip to CTBE members and friends.

Thanks in advance for your flexibility and I look forward to meeting you in Chicago and virtually!

Best,

Seungho Moon

IAP BOOK SERIES
Current Perspectives on Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Education (https://www.infoagepub.com/series/Current-Perspectives-on-Confucianism-Taoism-Buddhism-and-Education)

Complicated intra-cultural and inter-civilizational conversations and cooperation in and through education have become imperative for human and ecological survival and renewal in today’s world, which is facing unprecedented challenges. The purpose of this book series is to engage in in-depth, cross-cultural and intercultural, international dialogues on how Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism in classical and/or contemporary schools of thought can inform today’s educational theory and practice. Mutual engagement between East and West has had a long history, although obscured in recent centuries by the domination of techno-scientific instrumental reason in the West. It is time to renew nondualistic East-West dialogues for educational insights into relationality, creativity, leadership, compassion, and wisdom to help transform our current understandings and practices.

Although Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism are ancient wisdom traditions, they all have new developments in the contemporary age both in Asia and in the West. The focus of this book series is on current perspectives, historically informed and critically analyzed, and their contemporary influences in the diverse settings of education. The editors of this book series welcome manuscripts that draw upon one or multiple schools of thought within or across Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, and/or their intellectual, cultural, and spiritual relationships with Western thought to explore fundamental educational issues or content subject areas at all levels (from early childhood education to higher education) and in all settings of education. Not to reinforce the East/West binary, however, the editors look for manuscripts that evoke and inspire cross-fertilization of educational ideas, new awareness, and alternative pathways that engage difference in a mutually enhanced and enriched way.

The scope of this book series includes multiple educational dimensions such as purposes and aims of education, personhood and interbeing, curriculum and pedagogy, cultural diversity, educational leadership, embodied knowing, ethics, peace and sustainability, and international studies, as well as re-thinking education in specific subject areas. Other topics can be applied as well. The manuscripts can address formal or informal educational programs using a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary lenses.

Dear CTBE SIG members,

The purpose of the SIG is to bring together individuals who share a common interest in in-depth, cross-cultural, international dialogue on how Confucianism and Taoism in both classical and contemporary schools of thought can inform educational theory and practice.

Proposals for AERA 2021 are due in exactly two weeks on Friday, August 14, and I know you are doing transformative work. Please add your voice to the dialogue, and help expand the program space for curriculum issues by submitting to our SIG.

While we will miss the opportunity to connect in person in Orlando, not traveling to the 2021 annual meeting offers a unique opportunity to bring new people and perspectives into AERA and our SIG. This year, we can enrich the conversation with presentations from more p-12 practitioners, community organizers, academics from other disciplines, and colleagues from around the globe. Please share this invitation widely across your networks, and let’s make our division a center for movement building in educational research. Life and joy will reemerge; together we can contribute to this renewal.

Looking forward to your proposals!
