From Guetaria, Spain, to Nanjing, China, and Florence, Ala., fashion design faculty members in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas have traveled the world in their search to uncover information about a famed designer, to study ancient weaving techniques or to experiment with new sewing methods. Their work — inside the classroom and out — continues to build the re
putation of UNT's rigorous fashion design program, and MFA students work in accordance with these faculties and progress towards a specialized graduate exhibition. At UNT’s MFA programme, through research and original design generation, students prepare to teach in university programs and develop expertise in the fashion design field. Once accepted in the program, students establish a research focus in a fashion design specialty such as a category (e.g., children’s wear), a fabrication (e.g., leather or knit), a technical discipline (e.g., draping), or a historical topic (e.g., Balenciaga). After the completion of at least twelve hours of graduate coursework, each graduate student assembles a body of work for an initial graduate review, which is conducted by the entire Fashion Design graduate faculty. The work is presented in a range of formats, including complete garments, concept sketching, prototype samples, and inspirational source research. This review process is repeated each semester, and a student must pass in order to advance to candidacy. We are one of the few Fashion Design MFA programs in the United States. While there are many MA and MS degrees offered through a variety of colleges in fields such as human ecology or clothing and textile science, a terminal degree in the art and design arena is quite rare. Graduates with MA and MS degrees who desire a university faculty position must normally attain a PhD, but UNT Fashion Design MFA graduates are well equipped and highly successful in attaining academic positions, even in Tier 1 research institutions. From the student’s standpoint, this is an excellent advantage of the MFA. For more information visit : http://www.unt.edu/untresearch/2010-2011/fashion-design.htm
