Light threatens astronomical observatories around the globe. And light pollution is increasing at a rate of about 10% a year. Space-based telescopes may rise above light pollution, but they are much more expensive. And there are many new ground-based observatories already in the works. The rise of LED lighting, which is bright across all the spectrum from ultraviolet through deep red, is another big factor in the light pollution that is interfering with astronomy.
