The Theatre has recently been equipped with lighting and sound equipment to facilitate production work.

The Black Box Theatre is utilized by the department’s performance studies faculty for performance studies research, teaching, individual and group performances by faculty and students, and meetings of the Performance Interest Group. This space also serves as the site of a variety of other department events like the annual Communication Studies Awards Ceremony, Teaching Assistant Training, and a variety of receptions.

Unpacking Longview: A Staged Reading

Written and performed by Dr. Elizabeth M. Melton, Unpacking Longview is a performance about public school desegregation, family legacies, and East Texas identity. the performance dramatizes Elizabeth’s research into the long process of desegregating Longview Independent School District. Join her as she unpacks and re-presents her hometown's history using oral histories, news clippings, family stories, and other treasures.
This event will be presented as a staged reading, which is a stripped-down performance style that focuses on the script, storytelling, and the performers' connection with the audience rather than elaborate sets or costumes.

This year we present “Ghost in the Machine,” a showcase of performances wrought by means of AI technology. Come see Broken Diamonds next week in the Black Box!
Written and directed by Mo Gibbins, Broken Diamonds explores how the D.C. Comic villain, Harley Quinn, can be seen as a pedological figure who can help people escape abusive relationships and helps others recognize the signs of abuse. Gibbins' debut performance utilizes personal narratives of abuse survivors within the frameworks of comic books in order to reframe comics as a feminist coping strategy. The show runs from 3/29- 4/2.
