Serving as a spiritual continuation of the now-defunct Sprain, Shearling exhibits the reunion of a now decade-old collaborative force between guitarists Alexander Kent and Sylvie Simmmons. A subsequent recruiting of percussionist Andrew Chanover, bassist Wesley Nelson, and Keyboardist Elizabeth Carver filled out their orchestrally-minded roster. The band was mostly quiet for its first year of existence, avoiding live performances to instead focus on their brazen debut ‘Mo********er, I am Both: “Amen” and “Hallelujah”…’ The record retains Sprain’s characteristic commitment to intensity, further mutated through a newfound lens of collagist approach. Featuring only a single, hour-plus long song, Mo********er is a demanding exhibition of uncompromising ethos. Shearling’s aggressive live performances and meticulous recordings demonstrate an ambition, audacity, and emotional vulnerability that few contemporary bands can parallel.
“Shearling present a work that could grow to be one of the great cult albums of alternative music.” – Beats Per Minute
“Calling Mo********er both a wildly bold and ambitious debut would still be an understatement” – New Noise Magazine

October 26th: At the Helm presents… Graham Hunt & Prize Horse
Tickets: https://www.prekindle.com/event/96434-graham-hunt-and-prize-horse-denton
Graham Hunt can’t stop making records. Since 2019, the Madison, WI-based songwriter has been amassing a dense catalog of singular music at a pace rivaled only by the quality of the output itself. Now already on his sixth album, American Pyramid, Hunt pushed himself out of his comfort zones, eschewing the homespun, computer-oriented explorations of his previous work and instead entering Minnesota’s legendary Pachyderm Studio with an eight-piece band to try and capture a different side of his boundless creativity. The result is an album that stretches out musically and lyrically, with Hunt using his surrealist spin to dissect both the traditions of American indie rock as well as the unnerving detachment of the American experience itself.
Minneapolis’ Prize Horse make “a fuzzy, dreamy form of alt-rock that manages to be heavy and spaced-out at the same time” (Stereogum). The trio’s debut album, Under Sound, embarks their musical evolution which takes flight with ethereal, fuzz-laden tones departing from the grittier layers of their previous 2021 Welder EP.

August 31: A Place We Can Go : An Exploration of Grassroots Music – documentary short screening [Rubber Room]

Back in 2016, there was a tragic fire at the beloved “Do-It-Yourself” art and music collective “The Ghost Ship” in Oakland, California, where 36 people lost their lives. In the aftermath of this fire, a neo-nazi group on 4chan, the “Right Wing Safety Squad,” assembled to create a master list of DIY venues across the US to “crush the radical left,” or rather, call local law enforcement and pretend to be concerned citizens.
On that list was the iconic Fort Worth DIY venue, info shop, and lending library, 1919 Hemphill. After being targeted by this 4chan group, 1919 began a turbulent battle to stay open, but eventually closed in 2019. Despite this huge loss for the scene, DIY in DFW still lives on today.
“A Place We Can Go” sheds light on how DIY venues create safe spaces for Texans to exist, despite the pressing forces around us.

Sweeping Promises was born in a disused and reverberant concrete laboratory in Cambridge, MA. Tracked with a self-devised “single-mic technique” and mixed in mono, serial band-starters Lira Mondal and CauField Schnug completed their debut, Hunger for a Way Out, just in time to enter quarantine. With only a single basement show under their belt, the band received an unexpectedly wide reception, Firstly in online punk
circles, and eventually stretching beyond. In 2023, having gotten the chance to tour the USA and abroad with live drummer Spenser Gralla, the duo relocated to their new home and DIY recording compound in Lawrence, KS, and released their sophomore album, Good Living is Coming for You, on Feel It Records (US) and Sub Pop
(EU/UK). The album received wide critical acclaim for its pop songwriting and idiosyncratic punk production and led to yet more touring, boosting the band’s reputation as a Fierce live act.

“You cannot just listen to MELT-BANANA; you must experience them.” (John Peel)- Tokyo’s iconic noise-rock duo returns to electrify US audiences.
Formed in Tokyo in 1993, MELT-BANANA is a noise-rock duo consisting of Yako(vocals) and Agata (guitar). Known for their hyper-fast collision of hardcore punk, noise rock, and experimental electronics, MELT-BANANA has spent more than three decades building a devoted international following. Their early albums were engineered by Steve Albini, and their timeless, chaotic sound has led to tours with heavyweights like Tool and Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle/Fantomas), while they continue to bridge generations by sharing stages with contemporary artists such as Machine Girl and Hot Mulligan.
Now performing as an electronically driven two-piece, MELT-BANANA remains as explosive as ever. Following the release of their acclaimed 2024 album, 3+5, MELT-BANANA returns to the US on a highly anticipated tour featuring performances at Riot Fest and Levitation Festival, alongside a handpicked run of headline dates across 13 cities. MELT-BANANA’s live show is not just a concert – it is an unforgettable sonic experience that can only be experienced firsthand.
