It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Garry Landreth, founder of the Center for Play Therapy, author of the seminal text Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship, and visionary whose work transformed therapeutic relationships with children around the world.
Dr. Landreth’s dedication, leadership, and compassion influenced generations of play therapists and, through them, countless children and families. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Garry was a mentor, teacher, and friend to so many of us. He modeled genuine care, humility, and encouragement in both his personal and professional relationships, having a profound impact on each person he encountered. We will deeply miss him, not only as a pioneer and leader in play therapy, but as an extraordinary person whose wisdom and unwavering belief in others enriched our lives.
While we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader and friend, we also celebrate a life lived with exceptional purpose and service. Few people embodied intentionality as fully as Garry. His life’s mission was to make the world a better place for children, and he pursued that mission with steadfast commitment every day. Although Garry’s presence will be profoundly missed, his legacy will continue to shape who we are as professionals and as people. His influence lives on in the children, families, students, and therapists whose lives have been forever changed through his vision and work.
“I have discovered that when I am with children, the person I am is much more important than anything I know how to do in my mind.” Garry L. Landreth
