On May 19, the College of Information celebrated the opening of the Sinha Data Science Innovation Lab, a state-of-the-art space designed to expand access, fuel discovery, and prepare the next generation of data science leaders. During the event, students presented interactive research demos featuring autonomous robots, health informatics applications, and virtual reality technologies.

Made possible through the continued generosity of UNT alumnus Dr. Vikas Sinha and Anuradha Sinha, the lab will create hands-on learning opportunities, support groundbreaking faculty research, and strengthen industry partnerships across North Texas.

“For us, this lab is really about possibility,” Vikas Sinha says. “We hope the Sinha Data Science Innovation Lab creates an environment where students are not just learning theory, but actively solving meaningful real-world problems using AI, analytics, cybersecurity, machine learning, visualization and emerging technologies.”

As we wrap up this spring’s Great Grads, we’re proud to celebrate one final graduating student whose journey truly embodies the determination, excellence, and distinction of being a UNT Great Grad.

Fabrienne Foster graduates with her M.S. in Health Informatics, a 4.0 GPA, and a conference championship title — all while competing as a Division I student-athlete.

Raised in Mandeville, Jamaica, Fabrienne continued her graduate studies at UNT on a full-ride scholarship, balancing the demands of athletics and academics at the highest level. In February, she helped lead UNT’s women’s indoor track and field team to its first American Athletic Conference title and earned an individual conference championship in the women’s weight throw event.

Passionate about improving healthcare access and reducing disparities in underserved communities, Fabrienne hopes to combine clinical care, technology, and data-driven solutions throughout her future career in healthcare.

COI Great Grad Spotlight: Jahnavi Kovelamudi

Pursuing her M.S. in Data Science, Jahnavi transformed from a quiet observer into a driving force across the UNT community through her leadership and involvement in student organizations. She became a founding team member and general secretary of the Society for Student AI Innovation, co-founded Women in Data Science and served as its vice president, and was treasurer for Women in Computing.

Her involvement extended far beyond the classroom. Jahnavi presented her clinical AI project, CareLens, at the TMC AI Summit, THIA Conference, and UNT Research Day. She also contributed impactful analytical work through UNT Facilities, applying data-driven solutions to university-wide planning initiatives.

Jahnavi credits the culture of mentorship at UNT for shaping both her technical expertise and leadership journey. As she looks ahead, she hopes to lead initiatives centered on data integrity and ethical AI—building technology that supports transparent and trustworthy decision-making.

COI Great Grad Spotlight: Kai Corral

Kylee “Kai” Corral walked across the stage this May with a B.S. in Information Science — a milestone that reflects years of personal resilience, academic achievement, and unwavering determination.

While navigating medical setbacks and personal hardship, Kai reconnected with UNT’s support resources and advocated for herself. She persevered academically — making the Dean’s List three times and most recently being named to the President’s List. Kai was also inducted into Delta Alpha Pi, an honor society for students with disabilities.

But Kai’s impact reached far beyond the classroom. As a founding member of UNT University Program Council (UPC)'s Education and Awareness Committee, she helped launch Chronically Chill, creating a welcoming space for chronically ill and disabled students to connect, feel seen, and build community.

This fall, Kai will continue at UNT’s Toulouse Graduate School as a master’s student in Information Science, working toward a future of improving healthcare access through a patient-centered perspective.

We’re excited to return to our COI Great Grads series by celebrating the next group of outstanding graduating students who are making an impact through leadership, research, and resilience.

As an M.S. Data Science graduate, Johannas Meela Katikala found her place at UNT’s DVXR Lab, where she became a group leader and published research on improving mental health outcomes through virtual reality.

Johannas also mentored students from TAMS, helping young researchers explore thought-to-text technology, and earned The Sinha Scholars Scholarship for Data Science.

She credits her parents’ example of service and the mentorship of Data Science faculty for shaping both her career and her confidence.

Looking ahead, Johannas plans to work as a data consultant, helping organizations make smarter decisions by translating complex data into clear, actionable insights. She hopes to spend her career showing people that data is empowering.
