Staff Spotlight: Jack Topham
Co-Founder/Director of Finance and Administration

Jack is often the first person you’ll get to talk to when you call the office. He’ll take the time to listen and understand your needs and will go over our different programs so you can make the best decision. If we can’t help you, he’ll try to direct you to the right source and provide you with all the information you need about service dogs in general. He keeps track of new trends in the service dog world and a list of all the other service dog organizations that he can refer people to. Every day of the week, he responds to over 30 inquiries with patience and understanding.

Jack is in charge of finances and administration. He also provides customer support and services. He is a stickler when it comes to processes and keeping the organization on the right path and in good standing.

He has been involved in service dog training since 2009 and is always looking for new ways to help both the people and the dogs.

With his office wide open to any person walking through the door, Jack is often sharing his space with the office cat, Marvin. Marvin loves to make messes with Jack’s piles of important documents or jump on his computer.

Let's take a moment to revisit the Fort Stanton nurses to celebrate Women's History Month.

The Cadet Nurse Corp program began service in facilities and communities across the United States and abroad with more than thirty thousand nurses completing training by 1945, with more to come. Many of these nurses remained in the same facilities they trained at, which fulfilled the Corp’s mission of ending the nurse shortage on the home-front; however, more than half of graduated nurses applied to serve in the armed forces. The end of World War II saw a limited number of applicants make it as nursing officers. Despite this, over thirty-three thousand Cadet Nurse Corp graduates would go on to serve in federal facilities, including those operated by the Army and Navy, the Veterans’ Administration, The U.S. Public Health Service, and the Office of Indian Affairs. To learn more, come visit Fort Stanton and tour our hospital, where you’ll find a wonderful exhibit on nurses and their role in post-WWII America, as well as the fort.

On Christmas day we arrived for a Hospice POP. This family has lost their dad/husband and their son/brother. We arrived to visit their son/brother who is now also transitioning from Huntington’s Disease (a genetic illness).

Hospice POPs have a very special place in our heart because of all the times in life, this stage is truly one of the most precious, powerful and poignant times. When you know that the moments are truly “borrowed time” those moments also become profoundly rich with presence.

Prior to the POP, I spoke to Bo’s mom. She told me he used to love to write & has written a book called, “Backpack Boy” (a comic book).

He has a deep love for animals so his mom thought this would be perfect for him. I told his mom that I had a strong feeling, knowing her story, this POP was very much for her too.

When we arrived we were greeted with big smiles, though it was also apparent Bo needed space that day, which happens at POPs. We trust in the process.

This POP was here to support his family. His sister Daisha, who also has Huntington’s Disease had the total “animal whisperer vibe.” We could feel her love for animals and she lit up with the pups!

The rest of the family immersed into the puppies. THIS is what POP is about, making sure whoever is ready for a “Joy Healing” receives one. It is not always the POP recipient who needs the puppies, often some of the family members need it the most. We always trust in what will “be”.

Cara, Bo’s mom had powerful words of wisdom as she has endured more than most mamas when it comes to loss. When we asked her what mottos or thoughts have helped her through incredibly painful times of grief, she shared this: When her husband was dying, she was in so much pain as a single mama taking care of her husband and five children. She said she asked God what to do and she kept hearing the words, “Love them now....Love them now.” There is so much truth in this wisdom for the living and the dying.

The love in this house was palpable and it was a true honor to give a Joy Healing to this family on Christmas. HUGE thanks to JJ Hospice Therapy Dog for joining us on Christmas Day. Your furry babies are such joy bringers🙌🏼🤗!

On Thanksgiving at 11 p.m., David left his family at home and came in to help the on-call engineer with an electrical alarm in one of the operating rooms. Not only did David come in on Thanksgiving to save the day for the Surgery Department, he also brought a whole rack of just-smoked, fall-off-the-bones tender ribs. Now, that's how to earn a Heart Pin!
